JW called one of the state troopers "Trooper Boy", but he's a full-bred Louisiana Sheriff, with his own fiefdom. Just like every other Louisiana sheriff.

His BIL Billy Bob might be a different story.

What I found interesting is that Sheriff Pepper was an avid world traveler.

One of the great things about living in NYC is that anyone could come through the door of a restaurant. Imagine my surprise in 1998 or 99 when I saw Sheriff Pepper walk in with his family. I was usually resistant to celebrity at that point- but seeing J W Pepper in person made me gush a little bit. He was as warm as one could imagine= a quiet, well spoken man that didn't resemble a hair of Sheriff Pepper. He was gracious and kind, and appreciative of the recognition. This thread made me look him up and I saw that he just died a few years ago. Thank you Mr. James and Sheriff Pepper for some great laughs.

Fun fact, the same actor played the prosecutor of Al Capone in the Brian DePalma film, "The Untouchables," ya pointyheads.

THIS.

Where do you get the idea he's with the La. State Police?

His uniform says Sheriff's Dept. His car says the same. After his car is ruined by a boat he commandeers a state police vehicle with two state troopers in it, the same one that he pulls up in (with the troopers) at the Muni Yacht Harbor in New Orleans.

He introduces himself as such to “headquarters” over the radio in The Man with the Golden Gun

He was a sharp cookie and knew that if he introduced himself as the Sheriff of Thibodeaux (or whatever) Parish, no one would have a clue. So he just added "Louisiana State Police" to get their attention.

Or something like that.

He was the Master-at-Arms that ordered Buddusky & Mulhall to take Meadows to prison in 1973's The Last Detail. He looks like a cross between Ned Beatty and Brian Dennehy here.

A 1960’s/70’s Louisiana elected official with a mysteriously expensive and extravagant lifestyle? I hope Edwin Edwards didn’t know about this.

He was also the big beer man that made sure the Lil Bears from California played vs the Texas Champs in Breaking Training - BNB2..

It's a good story Morey..the lil Bears came all the way from California to play for their sick teammate.
