Dazed and Confused grossed 8 million in 1993 on a 6.9 million production budget

One of the best movies I've ever seen

Waterworld and The Postman, two of the great comedies of our time.

Once Upon A Time in the West is the very definition of tedium. I own it and have given it many watches to see what's there. Very overrated by self-proclaimed film aficionado try-hards. In the same vein of The Deer Hunter.

I'm not a fan of Deer Hunter. Once Upon a Time in the West is in my top 5 GOAT.

It's the Lawrence of Arabia of Westerns.
So I guess it depends on what you feel about Lawrence.
And Claudia Cardinale in that movie is the definition of everything you could ever want.
The score in Once Upon a Time, the actors, Claudia, the story...It's sublime. I don't know how anyone can pan it.

Lethal Weapon wasn't a big deal. It was VHS rental that caused it to gain popularity

There are some examples from Hollywood's golden age.
Casablanca was critically acclaimed but didn't do well at the box office.
It's A Wonderful Life was pretty much a box office failure at time of release and was a net loss for RKO.

That's kind of a big budget for a Linklater movie as well.

Lethal Weapon was a Top 10 grossing film of 1987 and the highest grossing film of March (when it was released.)
But speaking of 1987, what really bombed was Less Than Zero (but became a cult hit later) - it only made 12 million at the BO...Ishtar made more money that year.
And even more surprising...was
26. Wall St...43 million (it made 1 million more than Mannequin.)
41. Princess Bride...30 million.
51. Raising Arizona...22 million.
1. Three Men and a Baby...167 million.
2. Fatal Attraction...156 million.
1987 was one weird year.

I could be wrong but a movie that was panned is different from a movie that bombed right?
Panned, made money - Suicide Squad
Heralded, bombed - Citizen Kane

that has always been my interpretation as well. in fact, i dont really think they are confusing terms.
