The whole "Don't move until you see it.....he's got it" scene at the end is just so well done. Between the a-hole kid's acting, the flashback to Kingsley clearing off the chess board, "I'm sorry, dad," Kingsley's admiration and pride, Josh's inherent sweetness and offering to split the championship, "Take the draw/Move," "Good game," even the humility of the a-hole kid once he got beat, etc. It's just so well done, and a great climax.

Don't move until you see it...

The little look Josh gives the a-hole kid at 3:33 is fantastic. It's like "Okay then, a-hole, this is what you want.."

"take the draw"

"I have you, you just don't see it yet"

Incredible even after realizing he has him he offers the draw.

The movie was made before 9/11, which is fortunate because Fisher had some choice things to say about that as well.

He also said Chess was overrated (getting back to chess) and that it was just pure memorization of moves and when to use them.

He constantly lamented that there was no creativity in the game when you're playing the big boys.

quote:

I love chess, and I didn't invent Fischerandom chess to destroy chess. I invented Fischerandom chess to keep chess going. Because I consider the old chess is dying, it really is dead. A lot of people have come up with other rules of chess-type games, with 10x8 boards, new pieces, and all kinds of things. I'm really not interested in that.

I want to keep the old chess flavor. I want to keep the old chess game. But just making a change so the starting positions are mixed, so it's not degenerated down to memorisation and prearrangement like it is today.

Good movie, though mostly about helicopter parents.

The scene of the unruly parents locked in a cage in the basement during a tournament by the organizers, agonizing over every move is sad and hilarious.

One of the great lines ever said on screen.

The way that scene plays out, when that line is delivered. Devastating...

So devastating the teacher changed careers and went to work for Travicom after a cup of coffee at the CIA.

I've always enjoyed it. It's on Starz. I probably watch it at least once a year.

I was the chess champion in the sixth grade. Was first chair trumpet back then too.
I think I peaked a little early.

Absolutely - everyone I've turned it on too loved it. Folks who turned me on to Queens Gambit I told them if you loved that you (I did) you need to watch Searching for Bobby Fisher - they all loved it.

Crazy to think this film has Laurence Fishburne, Ben Kingsley, Tony Shalhoub, Laura Linney, William H. Macy, Joan Allen, Joe Mantegna, and Dan Hedaya.

I doubt anyone could afford this cast today.

The craziest thing is all those folks were it in and the brightest star in the movie was the kid who played Josh.
