None of that is important to the films though.

Obviously Jakku was the site of a major battle in the Galactic Civil War. Obviously The First Order is the remnant of the Empire.

Who is Snoke? How did he come to lead the First Order? What is the Resistance? Why are they separate from the Republic?

The formation of the Reistance is at least addressed in the Bloodlines novel. Basically the Republic becomes incompetent/corrupt. Many don't view the First Order as a real threat. Other senators secretly work for the First Order.

Leia leaves The Republic Senate when it's discovered that she is Darth Vader's daughter and forms "The Resistance" to keep tabs on the First Order.

Very thorough, thanks for sharing
I haven't read any of the connecting material so it's nice to see some things expanded a little more.

Obviously would still like to know Snoke's origins. I do feel Abrams will bring him back in some way in IX to address that. Whether through memories, force ghost, or otherwise.

expanded it into the realm of books/comics

Lost Stars is an excellent canon book that uses everything from the beginning of SW up to the Battle of Jakku as a backdrop for two character's lives. Not much detail is provided between the Battle of Endor and the Battle of Jakku as far as canon events go, more focusing on the character's stories.

You find out how the ships get crashed on Jakku,

Interesting... Lost Stars goes into how one of the star destroyers crashes into Jakku. So it sounds like at least this part of Aftermath: Empire's End is consistent with Lost Stars (and the beginning of TFA).
