Read The Hobbit several times, still have a couple copies, but never bothered watching the last movie. Freaking hell, there’s no reason it needed to be a trilogy, save for $$$. Absolute trash.

The Hobbit should be remade. Peter Jackson's version is terrible.

Im sure its been discussed ad-nauseum here but the biggest sin was totally missing the tone of the book. Also some scenes, that could have been incredible, were botched completely. The dwarves discussing the plan and singing about the mountain was a big one for me

Absolutely it should. A book accurate miniseries would be awesome

quote:The contract is limited to what's in LOTR and the Hobbit, which includes the appendixes of ROTK.
So I do believe the deal that was made for the intellectual property with the Tolkien estate pretty much excludes all of this material, except the parts I bolded. I think they are filling in the details with young-women-finds-herself-in-the-world story kind of stuff. I could be wrong about what the deal includes/excludes, or they may have made subsequent deal, based on the success of the series, to go ahead and let them have rights to these parts of the lore.
So they can't touch Silmarillion-only stuff, but the timeline is in there, and covers a good bit. And what's excluded is stuff like names, so no "Annatar" for Sauron, but you could make your own up with "Halbrand".
I THOUGHT Elrond referenced the War of Wrath when the party made it to Rivendell, and he certainly did the Last Alliance (mention of banners on the field).
*I just checked, and appendix B is the timeline. It does cover the basics I laid out.
Regarding the contract, I also thought that the writers were free to fill in the blanks, but NOT to contradict anything found in LOTR.
But they seem to have done that. A MAJOR issue is the creation of the 3 Elven Rings first. Those were made after Sauron and Celebrimbor collaborated on the 9 and the 7, and then left. The Elven Rings were the only ones done by Celebrimbor alone, without Sauron's aid, and thus uncorrupted. And no more Rings were made after Sauron forged and put on the One.
But this show has them making the Three, and Sauron leaving after revealing himself to Galadriel. Surely he doesn't go back after that, does he? But if they don't make the 9, you get no Nazgul. If you don't get the 7, you get no Dwarven hoards, and no quest by Thorin to reclaim his father's Ring (the Hobbit).
Gandalf was given his Ring when he arrived, causing Saruman to be jealous. He states he is named Olorin in the West, Gandalf in the North, Mithrandir in the South, and to the East he goes not. So this "Stranger" can't be Gandalf, he's headed East.
There's just so much wrong with the story as it stands, but like I said I hold out hope that they can give us some battles worth watching. Everything else is already broken.

One of the worst bastardizations of phenomenal source material I’ve ever witnessed.
