I remember an old video game where that was the finale and it was so bad arse.

Survivors on base after Finn blew up the cannon with a sacrifice. Here comes the Dreadnaught, met by Luke.

He destroys ship killing most of First Order heirchy except Hux and Kylo. Hux with Troops and cannon, Kylo went to get Rey.

Kylo who wants Snoke dead, wants power even more and claims the mantle of Supreme Leader.

He fights Luke killing him. Similar fashion to Obi Wan.
Rey leaves with Falcon, Luke appears to her as a force ghost.

Better death for Luke.

Better set up for the next Jedi.

The more stuff that comes out of Johnson's mouth the more you think he just went out with a point to do what everyone didn't think would happen. How is that good storytelling? You should not have to surprise people to write something good. There is a reason Abrams had that build up in FA.

Snoke... nope you are wrong
Rey... nope gotcha again
Luke... nope he isn't who you think

I actually like Snoke's death. It was actually surprising, and it allows a much more interesting character in Kylo Ren to take control. Similar to the Emperor, Snoke was just a means to developing the two most important characters. He wasn't an important character himself.

Prepare to be pissed in two years when he either comes back or we meet some other Bigger Bad that had been using Snoke as his front man.

Yes that would disappointing. The Rey and Kylo story is the main thing this trilogy has going for it, and I will be disappointed if its end is simplistic by providing them some greater evil to defeat together.

I actually thought the same thing when I left the movie theatre . I even defended it from a friend who didn't like it. But now that I have had time to digest it, I think it was bullshite. Johnson could have done everything you said with still giving some backstory.

I was surprised Snoke was killed. I was not surprised during the scene in which Snoke was killed.

People say that the Emperor didn't have backstory and that was (mostly) true but that neglects the fact that the OT (obviously) came first and we were being dropped cold into the universe.

Snoke needs explaining by the simple fact that we have seen the OT and prequels and know the Emperor ruled with an iron fist and sought to purge Force users. How did Snoke live? Did the Emperor know about him? He's obviously been in some battles before. How did Snoke get control of the First Order? Was it really as simple as saying "I'm your new boss...anybody that has a problem with it gets crushed with the power of my mind"

Not everything has to be explained but something does.

Right. They telegraphed what Ren was doing. It would have actually been shocking had he A) had the lightsaber turning and Snoke realized at the last second and stopped it and wrecked shop or B) never showed you it turning and had Ren move really quickly at the last second and spin it fast and slice him in half mid sentence.

Johnson picked the third, less good option. Show the audience what was about to happen, and then follow through with it exactly as you showed them.

Lucas never made a Star Wars movie by sitting down and thinking, ‘What do the fans want to see?’ And I knew if I wrote wondering what the fans would want, as tempting as that is, it wouldn’t work, because people would still be shouting at me, ‘F— you, you ruined Star Wars,’ and I would make a bad movie. And ultimately, that’s the one thing nobody wants.”

Well, Rian ... frick you! You ruined Star Wars!
