Have we had a thread to discuss how Rian is justifying some of his decisions?

I will add more as I find them.

The opening scene "prank call"
quote:

I knew [the movie] was going to get darker in some spots just because of what we had to do. It was really important to me to, at the very outset, make a bold statement of, we’re going to have fun here also. Relax, you can laugh with it also, this isn’t just going to be a dirge . . . That was the one thing I was most nervous about . . . You can never know until you put it in front of a big crowd of strangers is if the jokes play or not. So I was very relieved when we got the laughs. Oh, that very first scene. That was really the one that was just, I was holding my girlfriend’s hand very tightly when that came up. Then I relaxed when the audience got it and started rolling with it. It’s so important to me because that sets the tone and the expectation that, oh, O.K., there are going to be laughs in this movie.

Snoke not getting a backstory and early death

quote:

“When I was working on the character of Kylo, I came to a place where I thought the most interesting thing would be to knock the shaky foundation out from under him at the beginning of this movie,” Johnson said. “By the end of this film, he’s gone from being a wannabe Vader to someone who is standing on his own feet as a complex villain taking the reins.” Johnson also thought it would be “a really good setup going into the next movie.” “But then the question is: What place would Snoke have at the end of that?” Johnson said. “That made me realize the most interesting thing would be to eliminate that dynamic between the ‘emperor’ and pupil, so that all bets are off going into the next one. That also led to the possibility of this dramatic turn in the middle, which could also be a really powerful connection point between Kylo and Rey.”

Ending scene
quote:

“It’s mostly about Luke,” he said. “To me, it shows that the act Luke Skywalker did, of deciding to take on this mantle of ‘the legend,’ after he had decided the galaxy was better off with, had farther reaching consequences than saving 20 people in a cave.”
“Now the Legend of Luke Skywalker is spreading. Hope is reignited in the galaxy,” Johnson said.
“I couldn’t think of a more evocative image of hope than a kid who is playing with his Luke Skywalker action figure and being inspired by that to grow up and have an adventure and fight the good fight,” Johnson said.

Killing off Luke

quote:

“I had huge hesitance,” Johnson says of ending one of the most beloved characters in movie history. “I was terrified. It was a growing sense of dread when I realized this was going to make sense in that chapter.”
“I think the hero’s journey of Luke Skywalker concluded in Return of the Jedi. This [trilogy] is the hero’s journey of Rey, and Finn, and Poe,” Johnson said. “The [ongoing] story of Luke is one that has to play in tandem with that of Rey.”

Rey's parents

quote:

“I was thinking, what’s the most powerful answer to that question? Powerful meaning: what’s the hardest thing that Rey could hear? That’s what you’re after with challenging your characters,” Johnson said. “I think back to the ‘I am your father’ moment with Vader and Luke, and the reason I think that lands is not because it’s a surprise or a twist but because it’s the hardest thing Luke and thus the audience could hear at that moment,” he added. “It turns someone into a bad guy that you just hate and want to kill into suddenly, Oh my God, this is a part of our protagonist. We have to start thinking of this person in more complex terms. We need to start thinking in terms of a redemption arc.” “In our movie, it’s kind of the opposite,” Johnsons said. “The easiest thing for Rey and the audience to hear is, Oh yeah, you’re so-and-so’s daughter. That would be wish fulfillment and instantly hand her a place in this story on a silver platter.” “The hardest thing for her is to hear she’s not going to get that easy answer. Not only that, but Kylo is going to use the fact that you don’t get that answer to try and weaken you so you have to lean on him,” Johnson says. “You’re going to have to find the strength to stand on your own two feet and define yourself in this story.”

Leia Poppins

quote:

That scene originated because Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was one of the fans who kept speculating about Leia’s Force sensitivity, director Rian Johnson said at the Q&A Friday. “She kept asking, ‘Leia’s a Skywalker, Luke gave her this speech in Jedi and told her basically, ‘You have this potential, too.’ It seemed to me it would be a really emotionally impactful thing to see her use it,” the filmmaker said. Johnson felt overt Force powers might only awaken in her this directing in the midst of a crisis. “I liked the idea it would be an instinctual thing. This would be more like stories you hear about parents of toddlers who get caught under cars and they get Hulk strength and lift the car up,” he said. “It would be something in these final moments to show that she’s not done with the fight. And like a drowning person pulling herself back, that’s how it manifests itself for the first time in her.”

On fan backlash

quote:

Lucas never made a Star Wars movie by sitting down and thinking, ‘What do the fans want to see?’ And I knew if I wrote wondering what the fans would want, as tempting as that is, it wouldn’t work, because people would still be shouting at me, ‘F— you, you ruined Star Wars,’ and I would make a bad movie. And ultimately, that’s the one thing nobody wants.”

Jesus. The thought process in some of this is laughable. How about hearing about the all wise and powerful Luke Skywalker single handedly taking down some AT-AT walkers? You don't think that would inspire a kid more?

So just make it chaotic as possible and never address anything that was set up in TFA. Great decision, Rian. This was a direct betrayal and "frick You" to the audience who invested in this story.

Who is spreading this shite? The First Order? I doubt it. Maybe I'm just forgetting, but did anyone from the Resistance witness the full "fight" between Luke and Kylo? Then you've got a plothole with the Resistance having no idea what happened between Kylo and Luke. For all they know, Luke was killed by Kylo. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember anyone from the Resistance witnessing it to its completion.

So he has to be dead to be a legend and give the resistance hope? Shouldn't you actually die a heroes death to do that, not just fade away without anyone knowing. Seriously, does anyone outside of Rey and Leia know he's even dead? They obviously know he's alive since the kid is reenacting the scene of him getting shot at by the AT-AT's. Who told the kid he died?

The prank call is not even an issue with this movie.

I’d like it if it’s the FO spreading the legend of Luke. Like half of those soldiers watched Luke toy with Kylo then stop and prove to be untouchable even with a light saber. Then just vanished.

Maybe the next movie will show the FO fractured and losing confidence. Be an easy way to rebuild the rebellion.

Yeah, I don't understand how this story gives them any hope.

"Oh, Luke Skywalker just happened to show up, was shot at by the First Order, survived it, and then Kylo Ren comes to face him."
"Oh, so what happens next?"
"Well no one knows. Kylo Ren is still leading the First Order so take that for what you will."
"Wait, Kylo Ren is still alive? Do you have any proof this happened?"
"Nope."
"Then you're talking shite."

That is for you to decide. I was not giving my opinion. Just posting his comments on scenes he has been asked about.

They definitely should have shown that Leia would know Luke was using some type of astral projectuon. It would have made sense since she obviously has some handle on the force in the movie and EU.

I just cannot for the life of me believe this terd made this movie. I shouldn't be this mad over something as stupid as a movie, but I am. the more I keep thinking about it, the more it pisses me off. There's just so many things to dislike about the movie, and the more this little terd talks, the more I hate the movie.

In fairness, they may have done that.

Leia left Han's dashboard dice behind instead of taking it with her so she may have known it wasn't really there.

Which makes Luke even more of an idiot for maxing out his power to the point of death just so the Millenium Falcon's dashboard dice could be with Leia in spirit for a few minutes so I guess I shouldn't have gone there.
