I watched it and didn’t love it. I found myself playing on my phone. My wife liked it so we finished the season but I won’t miss it.

Because, that's what's important.

Has there ever been a video game movie or TV show that has actually been good?

Mortal Kombat. Street Fighter. Double Dragon. The new series on Halo is pretty entertaining.

Yes I actually enjoyed those.

This resident evil show was just beyond awful.

Really dig this show, and I am totally unfamiliar with the source material.

It looked like a show for teenagers (think, “The 100”), and my kids liked it. I doubt there was enough audience to support it.

I doubt any adults were watching it.

I’m always amazed at how stuff like this that is so bad makes it through story boards, writing, editing etc. Was everyone associated with the series just thinking to themselves wow this is really bad but never said anything?

It is the difference with having tough, challenging creative partners and yes men. The talent pool is so diffuse (there is 100x or more the content being produced today versus, say, 1978 just as a random year), that they're lucky to have 1 person with legit creative talent and the rest are hacks as it is. So, if you don't have a Christopher Nolan, Vince Gilligan, etc. at the helm, you don't even have a competent boss who can even discern what is "good" versus what is "bad". Without drifting into the political side, suffice it to say, there are "other" (non-merit) things being pushed in lieu of quality because quality is either out of their reach or no longer any sort of priority.

Take the OT Star Wars films and the prequels. Same "top dog" - Lucas. However, he had a tough, aggressive team to push back against the silliness (for the most part) and kept him focused on the quality storytelling for which he was mostly responsible. Plus, his wife at the time was an amazing editor and helped save the first film from George's worst tendencies in the editing room.

Flash forward to the prequels - all the creative partners were replaced by arse kissing supplicants, so you get shite like Jar Jar and all that terrible dialogue that permeates the entire mess.

Arcane is pretty solid.

I didn't watch all of it, yet, but I can recommend it based on the first 3 or 4 episodes. What "wokeness" there is seems authentic and organic. Doesn't attack or insult the audience. Tells a typical anime story with some twists.

If they didn't, it never would have seen the light of day.

Another dumbass woke moron to blame.
Such a terrible show. Probably one of the worst I’ve ever watched.

I honestly have no idea how filmmakers keep fricking up resident evil. Play one of the games and write a movie / show based on what you just played. Don’t add characters, or love interests, or whacky sidekick storylines. It’s one or two people exploring spooky settings with zombies and monsters strewn about the scenery.

Hell the last two games were almost written like they were thought of 1st as episodic television. Just use those same stories and you have 2 great seasons that already has a built in audience. It shouldn’t be this hard.

Netflix famously doesn't interfere with its in-house productions. They heard a pitch and funded it, trusting that the producers would create a solid product. In this instance, that gamble didn't pay off, or at least didn't pay off well enough to fund a second season.

So, no. They didn't use it as a shield. You not liking a diverse cast is not the same thing as hiding behind it. Hiding behind it would be backing it despite its failure, which they unequivocally did not do.

I wasn't trying to say Netflix did specifically, but the article immediately went to the "diverse cast" statement.

My thought was, "That's great and all, but I don't see how that made it suck any less."

Just finished the season and actually enjoyed it - googled to see when Season 2 might be and only then found out it had been cancelled.

Too bad - never gotten into the movies or the video game but thought it worked as a stand alone series and was interested to see how the story developed. Thought the cast was good too, Albert in particular but Evelyn and Jade/Billie as well.

Seemed like a high cost production though so understand the business decision given the emotional attachment and less than stellar reception - that said I doubt most of the people bashing gave it a real shot. Even the OP said they didn’t even watch ha

My teen daughters wanted to watch it because it had a teen girl protagonist.

Ugghh. Terrible.

Source material isn’t diverse enough.
