Just watched it on Roku. It's part of their free offerings, so no need to subscribe.

You have to search for "Disney." It's in a group with a bunch of really old Disney cartoons that are in the public domain.

It is mislabeled as racist by uninformed people. It is a sweet movie about racial harmony, featuring Oscar-winning actors from previous movies like Hattie McDaniel and filmed by legendary cinematographer Gregg Toland. Special Oscar went to “Uncle Remus” James Baskett. It won an Oscar for Best Original song.

Yeah I didn't remember it being racist, but it had been some time since I watched it so I figured I'd watch it again to be sure I was remembering correctly.

After this watch, I have no idea what is supposed to be racist about it. I hope folks who think it is racist would give it a watch and then list out the racist bits.

ETA: This means you, Mr. Coward Downvoter.

No takers?

When the movie ended, my wife said "what was racist about that?" I truly don't know.

I’d love to watch it again. I saw it as a kid in the theater. Can’t get the link to work.

so now you can all watch it and realize that its boring as frick whenever it goes to live action and that none of you would ever give two thoughts about it if Disney hadnt shelved it.

It's not racist. People just assumed it glorified slavery because of the rural southern setting and the happy black man but the movie takes place post civil war/emancipation.

I used to be an amateur painter and I would often paint rural themes from photographs I had taken. I remember a few people criticized my paintings as glorifying slavery. I was like what are you talking about, I took that photograph of a woman working in her garden two years ago down in Mississippi. To me, a weathered old country church, a farmer in his field or a man sittin on his stoop was just a timeless image of rural Americana. To others anything outside the city = slavery!

Uncle Ben was a successful black rice farmer in Texas who developed a method of parboiling rice and the model who represented him on the box picture was a chef in Chicago during the 40s. But reeeeeeeee slavery!

3rd grade. Class loaded up in a school bus and drove 30 minutes to the town with a movie theater and watched that masterpiece of a movie.

At least 60% African Americans in that class, and we all thought it was the best thing ever.

Because it was.

It was a great film, and there are FAR worse films in Disney's catalogue.

The way they tied the Uncle Remus stories into the live action story was pretty good, and I didn't find the live action portions to be boring at all. The cartoon portions were definitely better though. No doubt there.

Your post can only be viewed as wishful thinking.
