I guess by “Essential” I mean movies that best exemplify what makes the MCU special. So not essential to understanding the overall narrative but essential to the staying power of the franchise.

If it were essential to narrative this list would look pretty different

Black Panther should be Tier 2 - The horrible CGI and having Tchalla so mellow destroyed it being Tier 1 for me, Tchalla is better represented in the animated tv shows. Still love the movie.

Winter Soldier - Tier 1 - some of the best fight scenes in the MCU. Very adult but had humor. Made me love Cap cause as First Avenger did a bad job of showing Caps fighting.

Ragnarok - Tier 3 - seemed like a copy cat film of Guardians of the Galaxy. Don't understand the love but to each its own. Entertaining though.

Tier 5:

Age of Ultron
Age of Ultron
Age of Ultron

But it’s not. The CGI is bad, the acting is bad, the story is average, and it’s been written over in the rest of the arc.

Avengers
Infinity War
Endgame
Guardians of the Galaxy
Ragnarok
Black Panther
Winter Soldier
Civil War
Iron Man
Spider Man: Far from Home
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Doctor Strange
Ant-Man
Captain Marvel
Captain America
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Iron Man 2
Thor
Age of Ultron
Iron Man 3
The Incredible Hulk
The Dark World

This list is purely based on if you put DVDs of all the MCU movies in front of me right now, this is the order in which I would pick them up and watch them. Captain America is probably a little too low, but I got kind of bored watching it. (I was hung over at the time)

I think this is a pretty good ranking. Don't let the bastards get you down.

Why do people hate Ultron?

Pietro and Wanda were pretty weak characters, but Vision more than made up for that. And Ultron was a decent villain for Marvel.

You're racking up the downvotes with that list

I'll make a list in a little bit but just to get it out of the way, as i've said a million times on here, Iron Man 3 is one of the worst super hero movies of all time. All time.

It's more that it pales in comparison to a lot of the other MCU movies. It doesn't have the novelty as the first Avengers, where it was so cool to have those characters together. It doesn't have the massive scope and huge scenes that Infinity War and Endgame have. It's not funny like the Guardians movies. It's not fun and colorful like Ragnarok. It doesn't have the world building that Black Panther had. There aren't great action scenes in it like Winter Soldier and Civil War. It's not eye-popping visually like Doctor Strange. There are some odd scenes kind of shoehorned in, like Thor's vision.

That’s fine. I made an objective ranking of comic book movies and then had the audacity to break them down further into tiers that give my qualitative assessment of them without a whole lot of explanation.

I’d be shocked if I got a single upvote

I just put the list together and thought it’d be a good way to strike up a conversation. In typical Internet fashion, people are more prone to disagree and downvote and never say why and thats ok, it doesn’t bother me.

There is a lot wrong with Ultron (for one, it’s not even the AGE of Ultron but more like A Few Days and a Big Battle) but I think the biggest issue is that for an Avenger movie, it basically just exists to help set up the plot of Civil War. Otherwise it’s a completely expendable movie (sure it introduces Vision and Scarlet Witch but even that’s arguable how meaningful that is in the grand scheme).

While not as good as some of the best MCU movies Black panther was more than solid. I feel like people on here rank it so low just to get more "board cred"

This is where I'm at. Using OP's categories, it's at least entertaining if not essential. It may be tier 2 for me.

In terms of standalone character movies (I haven't seen the Spiderman films) it's a little behind Ragnarok, Iron Man 1 and Winter Soldier, but basically just right below them.

I never understand why this board consistently ranks it so low, other then to show they disagree with what they think are critics overrating it.

I rank it so low because outside of Kilmonger, I don’t care about anything else going on in the movie. Black Panther has a more interesting story in Civil War and the fight scenes in Black Panther just aren’t as good as Civil War or Infinity War. Maybe it’s the context of those two movies that make it feel average but that’s just the reality of how it was released and I’ve just never get compelled to rewatch it (hence it falls to Tier 4 instead of 3)

I just didn't find T'Challa all that interesting as a character. Killmonger and even Shrui were far more interesting. Also not happy they killed off Andy Serkis

Disagree. I thought the Black Panther movie was very meh, but T’Challa himself is a badass.

Chadwick Boseman was perfect in every scene he was in in Civil War.
