I consider the Wire a 3-season series with 2 sequel seasons (which decreased in quality as they went on).

So just a 5 season show If any of them would be an offshoot season, it would be S2. It introduces a ton of characters that never return/characters that I tend not to care about as much.

3
1
4
2
5

All of them being great TV. S5 being the worst is about the only thing I know for sure, the rest of the list could fluctuate.

It's interesting that the first half of the thread S4 was considered one of the worst along with 5, but in the later part of the thread 4 is up at the top as being one of the best.

All but 5 are fantastic and I wouldn’t argue with anyone who put any of 1-4 at the top

No spoilers on a season ranking doesn’t really make any sense

ETA watch the show THEN worry about rankings

Again wtihout getting spoilery, what makes 5 so universally the worst?

Season 5 can be viewed as "David Simon's axe grinding against his former Baltimore Sun colleagues."

I've noodled on this issue for some time. I was quite late to The Wire (I think I watched it in 2009 - 2010 for the first time) and I completely understood why Season 2 got the hate. It was just so jarring. As soon as you rewatch it, Season 2 clicks and grabs you.

Having said that, I'm having trouble with it being above Season 1. At this point, I have Season 1 and 2 as 1a and 1b and, frankly, 3 could just as easily be 1c. Especially in context of what is produced today, it is shocking that a show mostly packed with unknown character actors could be so well done. I think the writing deteriorated and Seasons 4 and 5 suffered, probably needlessly, because of it.

Oh no, I was one of the original season 2 fan boy. I just got tired of arguing for it. And Yeah, I'll champion him again but Ziggy is great and the most misunderstood characters of the series.

to you and sfp and others, what is it about 2 that would have you elevate it above 1? Granted I know that the thread has been spoiler-free thus far so it might be hard to stay within those confines but maybe try your best, or if you do put spilers at least give plenty of advanced wwarning ha.

I enjoy 2 a lot but itd' be hard for me to put it above 1. Also I hate ziggy and I dont' think I'd call him "misunderstood" at all. All of us have known a ziggy at some poitn in our life and no matter their motivations or underlying interanl traumas, your actions define who you are. Ziggy is constantly posturing like he's bigger and badder and cooler and smarter and harder than he actually is. He's a fake. He's pretend. He sucks.

I'm on S4 of yet another rewatch.

I still go back and forth on who is my favorite character.

Slim

or

Bodie

Stop. Ziggy was a crap character. He wasn't one of the most misunderstood, he was one of the worst characters of the entire series. That would be a dumb hill to die on.

How about watch all the seasons and figure out how it all circles back to the importance of season 2.

Of all the despicable and low life characters on the show, why does Ziggy piss you off the most? Because he isn't as cool as the others? He's the one character on the show that doesn't carry himself well.

Is it when everyone can see how pathetic you are and is that why it bothers you the most? Why do you think he did the things he did and are you sure? Whose affirmation is he seeking and are you sure? It's easy to say he's a little turd and I hope he gets his. But in the end did he really get his? He gets prison. Is that better than being killed? Are you sure?

Frank Sobotka is, easily, the best character on the Wire. His arc was literally Shakespearean. Most of everything in that season flowed through his arc.

As far as the Barksdale crew, 2 sets up their own stuff for season 3. It's the backbone of all of that conflict.

I only gave spoilers up to where you had said you've watched in OP. If someone else comes into this thread expecting no spoilers, for a show with a final season that turns 15 this year? When we're ranking/debating the seasons?
