I liked the movie, it’s very well made and gosling is fantastic. It’s in no way a sci-fi classic for me in the same way the Martian is.
I feel the same way about gravity…very well made, fun to watch, not anything I ever think about watching again.

Question for those who have read the book (I will, but haven't yet):
how do they address the issue of Rocky's species being blind, as far as developing the story?
I get echolocation for local movement, picking up the terrain etc. But we're talking about traveling through space to a distant star... you're not using sonar for that.
I also get that Rocky was able to make a device to allow him to "see", the crystal he points around the PHM.
Is it that his species eventually figured out the concept of "light", despite being unable to perceive it? I guess maybe associating it with "heat", which they could?
I guess to me that makes his species more advanced than ours, perhaps way more in some ways.
We evolved while being able to perceive light, sound, heat, and texture (touch), and all of our tech is built around that. Radio, IR and UV etc, is an extension of light (and heat), and we really only started being aware of that in the last century or so.
Rocky's people don't get light, and I doubt any thermometer could be used to pick up a star lightyears away. It could be used to detect where their own sun is, directionally. The amount of theoretical stuff you have to go through, to even figure out there are other stars, then to locate them, seems like a huge series of steps. Then the concept being so mature that not only have they mapped out the stars, they are able to perceive the effect of the astrophages on said stars, and that Tau Ceti isn't being effected.
I guess that's why they're so good at fabricating things, their tech is hundreds of years more advanced.

That little handheld device Rocky used to see the screens. In the book he explains that it’s actually old tech for them that he repurposed for the screens. It’s what they used to see stars and what not once they realized they were up there.
They more or less just call them “star 1”, “planet 1” etc because they “didn’t have ancient Rockys looking up there and naming them after gods” like on earth.

We want to go to the stars, but as far back in historical records as we can determine, mankind did look up at the stars. Millennia of studying astrological movements etc.
This would be a totally foreign concept to Rocky's people. Wouldn't even be aware of the stars until very late in their technological development. I'm struggling to even think of an analogy... maybe radar? That's less than a hundred years old, not "old tech" to us. But Rocky can whip out a handheld radar device to look around at Grace's ship.

Rocky has built in radar (or sonar) to “see” around the ship.
He needs gadgets for things that require light/vision or are too far for his spatial sonar to pick up on. Like computer screens and distant stars.
Compared to humans, they are advanced in some areas and behind in others due to the differences in humans and Rocky’s species.
Rocky and Grace talk about it a lot and decide on the whole they’re pretty much the same level of intelligence, which is why they both showed up to figure out what was going on with this specific star.

I watched this movie the first time by myself since my wife doesn't care for sci-fi. Had not read the book so I had no idea what was coming. Loved the movie enough to get my wife and oldest kid to watch it.
Then bought the audiobook. I think the movie is damn near perfect. The audiobook is even better.
