Very little green screen was used unless he was outside of the ship. They built a giant set for the ship and Rocky was a practical puppet voiced by his puppeteer.

Grace had recorded Rocky’s sounds and assigned words as they were communicating. He got tired of going back to the computer to read what Rocky said, so he assigned a voice to do it. It’s not really mentioned in the movie, but Rocky has perfect memory and can translate Grace’s language naturally after learning a word once.

so I’m not imagining that they went from one scene using the computer to translate to the next with rocky speaking perfect English?

The computer is always translating it because Rocky can’t form the sounds to speak English. It’s either off screen or Grace is wearing it on his side on a sling. By the end of the movie on Erid, Grace has learned to understand Eridian language without needing a translator.

ok that makes sense. The way they shot it though (for brevity and narrative ease, I get it) made it seem like rocky had learned English and the voice skills to speak it

Watched it recently. That was a very heartwarming and moving film. Highly recommend

Watched this movie last week and would give it about a 7. I almost feel like there's something wrong for not giving it a 9 or 10 like seems to be the universal consensus. I think my ranking is due to a couple factors, both of which are my fault. First I knew practically nothing about it as I like to go into a new film/show totally blind, so I only knew it was about space. I thought it was going to be a serious dramatic film though which it wasn't really and almost felt more comedic than serious. Seocond was the overwhelming praise it got. Again my fault, but I think I let myself get hyped up into expecting some mind blowing revelation of a movie and then maybe was a bit internally let down when it wasn't. I also wans't a book or audiobook consumer and it appears that people that were had a higher view of the movie.
It felt to me like the overall premise was "let's make a classic buddy cop movie, only instead of cops they're astronauts, and make one of them not human".
It's not like a 7/10 sucks. It was enjoyable and I don't have any regrets for watching it. I am a tiny bit surprised though that so many people are calling it literally perfect, 10/10, one of the best movies that's been out in years, etc.

Yea, I'd say understanding Weir's writing style for his books going into it would probably have helped. If you are expecting the expanse, it is going to be offputting

This is one of the best movies I have seen in some time. I sure hope we get a directors cut or an extended release of the movie.

I agree with you completely. Fun watch but surprisingly lightweight. You’re right it’s a buddy cop movie in space with a one dimensional human and a puppet. It’s ALF without the laugh track.
Gosling is super likable and I enjoyed spending time with his character but that’s about it.
I think the Martian is a far more rewatchable movie with higher stakes and greater reward

I may be misremembering, but Damon (maybe there was more crew) was the only person in peril in the Martian.

Based on the recent trend of retardation from the streamers when it comes to distribution rights for digital content, (video game platforms included), I would strongly recommend that folks embrace the trend of going back and purchasing physical media.

In the Martian, yes it is only Damon in peril but we have the whole other half of the movie which is the exciting and very compelling attempt to rescue him. And those characters back on earth are fantastic. That effort and problem solving is fantastic. In Hail Mary, they are just a plot device

It's one of the major plot points/crises of the movie for Grace: save earth or save Rocky/Erid.
