re: Predictions on Star Wars Ep 8 and 9 (TFA spoilers obviously and warning TLDR)

i never took palpatine to be more powerful than vader.
Just judging from Empire, Vader certainly sees it that way. He's directly plotting to overthrow him but the Emperor terrifies him and thinks Luke can do the job if he's properly trained. Plus it doesn't take a lot of imagination to kill Vader with the Force. Just pull out some wiring on his chest panel, and he's dead.

vader didn't want to be the military of bureaucratic leader. he was just the head of the elite special forces of the empire. he was like the religious leader and symbol establishing the power of the empire for palpatine. i actually think the death star was kind of a competition with vader for that symbol, and vader "wins" b/c the dark side is more powerful than mechanical means
"Luke you can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together we can rule the Galaxy as father and son!"

i need to rewatch the OT but i just didn't get that read. i took his statements to luke as manipulation to get luke to turn/further justify him going to the dark side. i think he does want to be the religious leader, but not the imperial leader. i don't think he really had any desire to do more until he met luke again. even if he and luke teamed up, luke would be the leader

for all the hate ROTJ gets for being a vehicle to sell toys, i bet those arguments will be ignored for this one

Anyone else think that Snoke is Darth Plagueis the Wise?

Aside from Captain Phasma (clear tool) can't think of many on the top of my head. BB-8 will sell like hot cakes of course, but BB-8 was so good on his own. Any other examples popping into your head, because I'm sure they're there.

I asked that question not as much looking for an actual direct response, but rather as an impetus to ease into a discussion on Plagueis's effect on the original trilogy now that we know he's still alive, but whatever.
If Plagueis was manipulating the Emperor behind the scenes and was wholly responsible for the Galactic Empire, it explains why he's trying to do literally the exact same thing again with the First Order, and likely played a major role in Ben's initial fall to the Dark Side - and certainly his obsession with Vader.
Which then gives a bit of plot justification to Abrams effectively reusing the plot to the original Star Wars.

that trooper mace thing
all of the old characters forced into the movie (esp R2D2 and C3PO)
all of the cameos of old alien types in the movie (which may be old characters with cameos. it wasn't really explained much), like the mon calamari, the nien nunb, and this thing:
snoke
hell it wouldn't shock me if they sold that "chess" set b/c they forced it into this movie

I really see Kylo leaving the dark side of the force by the end of the trilogy. it really feels like hes what anakin could have been. we see him already fallen to the dark side, but shows a ton of inner conflict. he seems to be one of the most force sensitive characters we have seen (that blaster scene was amazing). i think he will end up switching at a pinnacle time and be the true balance of the force.

ok that makes sense, since i've only seen that once and i was laughing during a lot of that movie
i laughed during Ep7 when they were like "it's not the death star. IT'S BIGGER!" and the lady next to me looked at me with demon eyes

He was the Emperor's master, mentioned to Anakin in III to convince him to seek out the Dark Side

holy shite look at the unbalanced acting in that scene

There is a book in the EU that is about Palpatine and Plageuses relationship and the plot to overthrow the galactic empire. I said this in the other thread but the description in the book is very similar to what we see of Snoke.

Isn't there a book that leads into this movie? Does it go into Ben's turn to the dark side?

somebody was posting about the novelization last night in the movie thread to confirm that rey and kylo are cousins

Fast forwarding I see Ren or Rey ultimately leaving their prospective light side/dark side path for something way more powerful - the unifying force. The only true mythical force left in the Star Wars universe. This is the Force of both light and dark and it would take the ultimate master, the master of all, to wield it.
This is actually where the series has already gone - Kylo isn't considered a Sith, but more of a "Dark Jedi".
"The Supreme Leader believes Ren to be the ideal embodiment of the Force, a focal point of both light and dark side ability."
"But Kylo Ren is no Jedi, nor is he a Sith. He is the archetype of a new generation of dark side users that have emerged to fill the void left by the Sith's demise."
