Powering my way through the M:I movies. Is it normal to have 5-6 face swaps per movie?

Just finished Mission:Impossible 2 and there was like 4 or 5. The first one had just as many I think. Is it customary to expect these in the rest of them? They’re on Paramount+ by the way.

it was a new special effects toy the directors had to play with, they all but completely forgot about it in the other movies

Nice. Going off topic, but don’t get discouraged by the writing in Mission Impossible 3 with it’s dependency on macguffins/mystery boxes. The series rebounds and soars higher and higher from the fourth, fifth, and sixth movies.
If you’ve ever wondered how strong the MI series is, just understand that it’s the only thing that Jar Jar Abrams & and Alex Kurtzman couldn’t cripple.

Nice. I'll have to check them out.

Watched 3 today. Didn’t think it was bad. You may have to elaborate on you mean by “dependency on macguffins/mystery boxes.”

Hoffman makes up for the "bad" movie also Cruise is overacting a storm.
The direction that Mission Impossible went from IV on was one of the 2 or 3 career defining moves for Tom Cruise.

I’m exaggerating a bit, but the rabbit’s foot macguffin sticks out like a sore thumb watching the movie in the present day just because I now know just how much of a hack writer JJ Abrams is.

Yeah, they might‘ve mentioned it and I missed it, but I was confused as to what they thing was even capable of. Or what it was supposed to do.

i absolutely LOVED the first Mission Impossible. i absolutely HATED the second one and it really soured me on the series, and I was unable to finish the third one for all the reasons listed above. by all accounts I need to go back and give the rest of the series another chance, I just havent been able to make myself.

A few years ago the wife and I watched all of the M:I movies. Both of us had only seen the first couple prior to that. But the trailers for the newest one at the time (Fallout) looked good so we decided to watch them all.
And we were very pleasantly surprised at how much we liked them all. Even the third one.
But they were all really good, entertaining movies.

quote:Rollin Hand (Martin Landau's character) was the master of disguise on the original TV series. The rip away mask was his forté. Cruise's character was based on an amalgam of Hand and team leader Phelps (who they inexcusably turned into the villain of the first film).
I was very young when the TV show left the air, but I seem to recall a lot of make up and masks in the TV show as well. Isn’t it just a carryover from the original?
The "amazing masks" in the first film were ridiculously bad. Any foreign spy who couldn't pick Cruise in those joke shop masks out of a crowd had to have been blind.

I don’t understand the hate for MI:3. Philip Seymour Hoffman was awesome, Cruise was Cruise, Keri Russell had a cool role, the action was good. I’ll admit the finale/kill at the end was a little underwhelming.

I probably need to give it another chance.

You really do, Tom Cruise's dedication make them worth it. The Last Action Hero wants us to appreciate cinema. See them before Dead Reckoning comes out, worth watching in a theater.

1 is probably much better than you remember, it was just a different kind of movie. Had some real De Palma flares. There’s a great Rewatchables podcast on it.
