Brian Fellow’s Safari Planet always cracked me up.

His nickname in the writer’s room was “Glue” because he was capable of keeping any sketch together.
When they do those all time casts, he is considered the utility infielder who can make anything work.

quote:Lovitz said he had to beg him to come on the show. I'm guessing that Hartman didn't see himself as a Belushi or Bill Murray. He sort of built that utility player role for the show, paving the way for other comedians to come in and hold the show up for the "stars".
I'm impressed by the number of these sketches that feature Phil Hartman. I think he was under-appreciated in his time.

This one always makes me laugh. The Celebrity Jeopardy is great.

All that is true but it under-sells his ability to lead. His Clinton was the first great impression of BC. He wasn't enough of a diva for his own good (to be adequately appreciated).

He was also a guy who got into comedy later than most, which likely influenced his approach.
He used to be a graphic artist and designed album covers including America’s Greatest Hits.
He makes me want to think of Dana Carrey talking about his first open mic night where he thought he was going to win then the guy before him destroyed everybody. Turns out it was Robin Williams before he was famous.
An experience like that can get into your head about how you may be good but there is always someone better.

I loved singing as a teenager, but I always thought I wasn’t really any good at it. I HATED my voice. I would go karaoke with my friends, and even enter competitions and get destroyed by my friends. Now, as adults, all of those friends are signed to record labels. I won my first competition while two of them were on tour, and I’m vetting label deals for my own music projects. Turns out, we were all really really good, but those guys were just all time greats.
TLDR: I thought I sucked because I was surrounded by elite level talent but I was actually pretty great, myself. The pond you’re swimming in can have a huge impact on how you see yourself.

a lot have been mentioned, but this is my favorite Cold Open sketch with Steve Martin from 1991. So many great lines and favorite cast group of all time.
