Jurassic Park seems to fit into this category. The first one is considered a classic while the others are mediocre to total dog shite.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is great while a notable decline in the sequel. At World's End (#3) is a dreadful movie that doesn't make much sense. The other two that have come out more recently are not overly popular.

What other franchises fit into this category?

Jaws?

Which I don’t even think of as being a franchise but technically it is right?

ETA: Men in Black and the Mummy.

Matrix 2 was entertaining as hell, I don’t care what anyone says. The third one should be remade completely because it was incredibly bad.

We all know Part II and III were just cash-grabs.

I still find Reloaded and Revolutions to be entertaining, but they ain’t good.

The Hangover.

I laughed at parts in 2 & 3 but I never really wanted to watch them again.
