Platoon is such a different watch than other Vietnam films

After recently hearing the Oliver Stone podcast with Joe Rogan, I decided to revisit Platoon. I probably had not seen the whole film in 15+ years.
Once you found out that Barnes and Elias are based on real platoon seargents, and other grunts were based on real guys, and Sheen is obviously playing Stone, it totally changes how you view the movie.
Vietnam vets all say it's the most realistic depiction of the war. And why wouldn't it be. It's basically a semi-autobiographical picture from someone who was there.
The way it shows the downtime and the exhausting yet mundane jungle hikes and dealing with bugs and snakes and rain and sleep deprivation, and all the backgrounds of the soldiers (lots of them from small town in the south and Midwest) is what comes across as the most authentic feeling.
The other Vietnam films are still great, but knowing the Platoon's backstory presents a much different experience.

Platoon and Hamburger Hill were the most realistic for sure.
Platoon’s only drag was the politics and unit divisiveness. It was based on actual experiences and people but even Stone said he did not experience the village atrocity scene. It was based on possibilities.
Hamburger Hill captured the nuances, lingo and inter-racial strife more accurately.
I was a Marine grunt (0311) in 1969 at the DMZ when Hamburger Hill was going down about 60 miles south of us in the A Shau and we heard about it in the bush the same week. That’s how bad it was.
Platoon takes place much further south about a year earlier. The Vietnam War changed in scope, tactics and politically by the year.
Still, these two films best depict the every day life of grunts in the field. No movie can accurately capture the horrors and fears of true combat.

I've listened to a lot of interviews with soldiers that were in the thick of it in Vietnam.
To a man they all said Platoon was the most realistic movie in regard to the action and violence.
They all also said that Apocalypse Now was 100% realistic in regards to the mental anguish they suffered there and when they got home.

You can definitely say this about the first.
The second was trash. The good reviews and Oscar nods were just bullshite fluff because of Lee Donowitz’s death.
The irony is that his death is what probably contributed most to the flick sucking arse.

Truly romantic movies.

I gotta admit that is one of the better obtuse references I have read on M/TV.

Apocalypse Now was a really good movie. But, so disturbing. The Marlon Brando scenes at the end are just plain bizarre.

Just watched a documentary on the movie the other day. Elias was based on an individual. Barnes was an amalgamation.
The documentary was pretty good - think it was Nat Geo or Smithsonian.

Did you mean obscure? Because I am confused.
