I thought the opening dance number was not quite as good as the previous season, but oh well. I enjoyed the episode. It did feel short, but that is the way with most anticipated premieres.
I am however getting a little "Gunn"shy. I'm not a prude by any means, and am not bothered by nudity, but the orgy and excessive dong flapping just seemed a little out of place. I get the hard edge nature of the character and enjoy it, but there just seems to be a psychosexual aspect of James Gunn that pushes the envelope for me. Perhaps it is intended. I just found it a bit performative without adding to anything. It's not a big deal and it won't dampen my enjoyment, but just a little overdone IMO.
I think it's just the context of melding into the greater DC Universe that bothers me. And there is also some aspect of kids watching the intended audience of Superman that will invariably bleed over into this audience. I think he could accomplish what he wanted to without bulldozing over the line. No big gripe and can't wait for the rest of the season. No reeeee...just a mild discomfort.

Yeah I didn’t really get the whole orgy thing either. The threesome last season was fine and the butterfly chick was hilarious but this was a little much. Didn’t add anything for me and wasn’t really funny

It wasn't a quick scene either. It kept showing different rooms and different angles lol. Dongs everywhere. It was definitely a bit much, but I will say that my wife was cracking up during that scene.

I mean, I guess it does show us how devastated he is that Harcourt still wants nothing to do with him. So he went on the worst bender of all time And that’s going to be a theme throughout the season because the life he wants is the one in the alternate universe. But still shoehorning in that plus making him overtly bisexual is weird

It's not just her, but she is a part of it. For his entire life he's lived it by just doggedly moving forward and using his ideals about "justice" as a focus to ignore his past as well as the ramifications of his behaviors. Season 1 caused him to stop and reflect and that let the camel's nose objective reflection get under his tent flap.
He had always wanted his father to be better, someone he could have some sort of positive relationship with and one where he didn't kill his brother. And then he finds a universe where he has a positive interaction with his father and they may have even worked together. It gives him a glimmer of hope that maybe he really can be the person he's always tried to picture himself as.
So then he has the interview and it was like fate was pointing out that his life was a cruel joke and he was the butt of it.
Where Harcourt comes into it is that he saw their time together as the first sparks of a bond, two broken people building each other up... together. Her rejection of him cemented the growing idea of being worthless, so he lashed out by getting as fricked up and surrounding himself with as much debauchery as possible in order to avoid the pain.
So we have this really wild and distracting drug-filled orgy scene that goes on and on... and ultimately it's not enough to distract him. That was the point. While we were all looking at it going "wooooooah! that's a lot", it didn't even register to him because his pain was too great.
They definitely delineated the show from the Superman movie.
But... I kinda like that. The real world has all sorts of different sides, some nice, some not so nice, some wild and freaky :freakoff.gif:. While this is a "superhero world", Gunn seems to want to make sure the audience understands this world also has sides. Some will be more bright and shiny like Superman, some will be darker and grittier like Batman and some will be "I'm fricked up like a lab rat but I have some special skill and/or ability" like Peacemaker. All in all, this was a helluva first episode (discussions of the new dance intro being set aside).

Excited to get Pratt into the fold
Was listening to Gunn on his casting of him in Guardians. He said no and didn’t want to even audition him because he was the fat guy from Parks and Rec
