A Hollywood critic went into whybthatbis.
Basically, she's very popular and academy members just assume she's always good without seeing all the movies to make an accurate judgement. The critic says a lot of times, the academy members will see only 2-3 of the best picture nominees. That's why studios spend so much money making it available to them. The whole system is fricked up.

Has anyone seen Man Called Ove? I loved the book but haven't watched.

My kids are both under 5 years old, so I don't really have an informed opinion about the Oscar nods. I just don't see as many movies as I sued to (I am a year behind, I catch up at home... I was pleasantly surprised by Spotlight).
My issue with the nominees then is more generally than specific to any one nominee because I can;t really have an opinion on an individual performance short of Arrival (which I thought was genuinely great) or Elle (go see it, though its unsettling). But my issue is that the TYPE of movie is fairly non-diverse. Not in a race/gender way, but in a tone way. They are all very serious films about very serious things and try to say something very serious about it.
I think the nominees would be livened up by recognizing this was a great year for horror films. Now, I don't think Don't Breathe is gonna get a nod (though it should), but you could still nod towards horror by nominating Oscar-y films like The Witch or Neon Demon. They are the sort of horror films that the Academy could actually like. If they were really feeling ambitious, throw a Best Supporting Actor nom to Patrick Stewart for Green Room.
But also, how about one or two fun noms? Sure, they won't win, but how about Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool? He carried that film. Or Hailie Steinfeld for The Edge of Seventeen? This would set the internet ablaze, but Kate McKinnon had a star making turn in Ghostbusters, why not throw her a nod (not the rest of the film, just her, I know you hate it)? How about Donnie Yen getting a nom for being the best part of Rogue One, the highest grossest film of the year? Maybe a best actress nom for American Honey, recognizing a well-regarded indie film?
They wouldn't win, but it would be nice to have some nominations for things that weren't so... beige. Sure the Very Serious Film is gonna win, but how about a few fun nominations?

What you describe is exactly what the Globes are for.

La La Land is going to mop the floor with most of the awards, and that classifies as a fun movie

And the Globes fall down on the job. Their noms were boring, too.

Uh, Reynolds and Steinfeld were nominated...

I'd like to see "The Lobster" win best original screenplay.
Has anyone else seen the documentaries listed?

I've seen OJ, 13th, and Life Animated. OJ was on ESPN, and you can still get it on demand if you missed it, and the other two are on Netflix or free.
Life animated is amazing. Really moving story, and it would be my personal pick. It will, of course, lose big time to the OJ documentary.

I realize they nominated two of the comedy actors I mentioned by having a category specifically for comedy and doubling the nominees. Yet they ignored horror entirely not to mention the highest-grossing film of the year (which was honestly good and well-reviewed), and they spent most of the comedy nominees on more prestige films. In a way, they are even MORE boring than the Oscars because they have a category reserved for fun movies and twice the slots, yet they still went overboard on prestige films.
That's an even larger failure.

Yeah, I feel like the OJ doc will runaway with that category.
