I like Nolan a lot. But Oppenheimer is a seriously flawed movie. There are four basic storylines; development of the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer's love life, Oppenheimers security clearance, and Strauss' hearing. The problem with the movie is that the last acts depend on dramatic momentum that just isn't there. The security clearance and the Strauss hearings are DGAF from a dramatic perspective, even though RDJ is fantastic. So the movie can't really build narrative momentum. Very watchable from a production standpoint, but stillborn from a dramatic perspective. There is no there there.

That’s definitely a take.

First hour was up and down for me. Second act is Nolan at his best. The third act is also well made, but too long IMO.

Damn. Now that you found those flaws, I hate it. Thanks for sharing.

I have to disagree. I thought there was drama there.

Agree. Plenty of drama in the 3rd act. Great film!

Really, you found whether Robert Strauss became Secretary of Commerce to be dramatic? It’s not. This is why Nolan had to basically distribute the third act over the entire movie. He was hoping for the inherent drama of building and exploding an atomic bomb would rub off on a dry senate hearing.

There's more going on in that particular thread than simply a confirmation hearing.

Well there’s some mystery that ends up resolving to some Mean Girl shite. Strauss had the madz because Oppenheimer dissed him years earlier. It was Scooby-Doo level.

That's only part of it.

Strauss was under the impression that the scientist community was out to get him when he stressed over the Oppie/Einstein conversation by the pond. He always thought something bad had been said about him, but by the end of the movie, you find out the conversation wasn't about him at all. It was about something more important than Strauss all together.

So, the father of the Atomic Bomb not being able to work at an AEC (now DOE) facility ever again because of rumors and McCarthyism (along with the drama of the Strauss hearings) are DGAF? OK, I guess...

So the culmination of 3+ hours of storytelling is "I suspect he said something bad about me years ago." Gimme a break. There is nothing at stake in the last hour or so. Even Oppenheimer DGAF about keeping his security clearance. His wife has to get on him to show some resolve. There is no real drama for the last hour or so of the movie. It's well made and easy to watch, but it's just not that dramatic.

That’s a pretty simplistic view of what all was going on in that last act.

And yes, I got drama from it.

Humanity was set on a really different course because of Oppenheimer's security clearance. I felt profound loss. /s

What are you seeing in that more complex view?

That it was interwoven with what Strauss did to get the confirmation hearing. And Oppenheimer’s clearance issues.
