7/10. Glad I watched but don’t have any desire to see it again.story was sub par. Communist sympathizer is super smart and headed the Manhattan project that everyone already knew about. Big whoop

Wasn't it based on some book that had a lot of the details from the people involved in the project
It's the most pivotal point in world history and had the Germans figured it out first our country might look a lot different

are you only interested in bio pics of people and things you’ve never heard about?

no I’m interested in exciting bio pics. Napoleon should’ve been a great one, if it wasn’t just mopey Joaquin Phoenix fricking doggy style for nearly 3 hours. Caesar would be a great one. Remake patton and show him hunting pancho villa from his younger days. Make one about Hannibal. Hell if we’re just talking about scientist from world war 2 I preferred the movie with cumberbatch where he played the gay dude who basically built the first computer to Oppenheimer.

but what does this have to do about the movie Oppenheimer? I’ve heard multiple people say this, whenever the movie never made a point to show it as a race against nazis. It was about how the guy who built the bomb was a womanizing commie sympathizer (at best if not full on communist) and how some shitty politician tried to use him in a game of political chess during the height of the red scare.

they did.

they made a big point. they talked about it a lot. they introduced the nazis scientist working on it and how Oppenheimer met them before the war.

Oppenheimer talked about how important it was to beat them for jews.

and THEN it comes back around to be a point on how he never anticipated using it after Germany lost to beat Japan.

With such an intellectual criticism like this I have been won over to now not think this is a great movie. Well done

I thought the first act was just ok, the second act is Nolan at his best. The third act is also strong, but a bit too long, IMO.

he had one short scene with him. And then there was one line about them working on it as well. Now compared to the screen time RDJ got and the amount of time they spent on his court hearings and the amount of time it showed him with his wife or lover and the complex relationship they had. The focus was on Oppenheimer the man, not Oppenheimer the scientist who was head of the manhattan project. That was simply a slice of the pie that made the man and so they cover it in the movie. If that’s what you’re into fine, but please for the love of god stop trying to use the point of why the movie was so good was because it goes in detail over the intensity and gravity of the project itself. If it did it would’ve been called the Manhattan project not Oppenheimer.

I agree with you with the caveat that i haven’t seen the movie. And I have not seen Oppenheimer bc I’m just not interested in him. I already know the bomb got built.

I’ll direct you to the statement I just made. He has one scene where he runs into the nazi scientists and they mention it maybe a couple times after that. Maybe actually show the nazis working on the bomb, and give those nazi scientists more screen time than RDJ if you really want that to be the focal point of the film. But that wasn’t what Nolan wanted anyway, it was a biopic about a womanizing communist sympathizing scientist who happened to be really good at physics and therefore spearheaded the Manhattan project

the issue that I have with many of you who sniff the farts of this film, is you call it great in one breath, then when someone asks why, you say it’s because it’s telling the story of the most monumental event in human history, when that wasn’t even what the movie is about. It’s about the man who happened to spearhead that project because some people, assuming Nolan included, find his life fascinating. And if that’s why you loved it great! But don’t say it’s because of all the in depth detail it shows of the Manhattan project. The Manhattan project is simply the vessel that happened to be used to tell the story of the man. If you’re going to say something is great at least understand why you hold that viewpoint

Spoilers

I enjoyed it, but largely agree with this take.

A large part of this movie a retelling of a congressional investigation and confirmation hearing. As a story telling device it’s ok, but I did not find the senate confirmation hearing for commerce secretary in the 50s terribly interesting, and didn’t really like the scooby doo presentation and conclusion of the Lewis Strauss character.

Watched this several times and generally enjoy it, but as I’ve argued before, it’s seriously flawed. Oppenheimer should have had his security clearance revoked because he was co-opting his position to make naive arms control arguments. The hawks were right as history showed. Finally, as I’ve argued before, the Strauss confirmation hearings were a terrible way to bring the drama to a climax. Nobody gaf about Robert Strauss being Secretary of Commerce.
