I kinda feel like this is a sort of forgotten and underappreciated film.

It's been coming on AMC a good bit lately...I had forgotten how awesome this movie is. Just a really simple, straightforward western.

The story is simple...small group of open range cattlemen moving cattle across the country go head to head with a local land baron who hates freegrazers. And everything eventually leads up to a great shootout in the end (the shootout lasts like 15 minutes or more).

Costner and Duvall are both great, as are Gambon and Bening. And the scenery is completely gorgeous.

Thoughts?

Duvall is completely awesome in this one.

And:
quote:

You the one killed our friend?

is fricking badass.

Only thing about the gunfight is that they're standing ten feet from each other and aren't hitting shite. I know guns aren't very accurate back then, but Jesus...also, I like that they do reload a little bit, but Costner shoots his Peacemaker, which holds 6 rounds, about 15 times at that one dude.

Yes. My favorite moment in the film, too...

To an extent. But standing that close to each other is a stretch.

I love how he shoots ole boy in the dome and everybody just stands there for like three solid seconds like "WTF, did that just happen?" until Costner starts shooting more people.

Actually, there have been several experts that lauded the director for the accuracy (no pun intended) of the fight scene. In a real gun fight, people don't calmly stand there aiming and squeexing off rounds, hitting everything with one shot. People freak, dodge, weave, and miss a LOT.

Didn't Costner Direct this movie? I always thought this was one of the best shootouts ever.

I love this movie, but one part of the shootout has always bothered me. When the guy gets shot through the wall with a shotgun and flies across the alley like he was hit by a truck was not realistic. The rest of the scene was great.

Per the AMC movie notes thing last night, Costner called that the best stunt he's ever seen in movies, when the dude gets shot and flies back like that.

Some of Costner's best work imo

"I didn't come all the way from Ireland to have my land PISSED ON by freegrazers!"

There were a few guys get shot and fly backwards which just doesn't happen. And one guy was shot by a scattergun from across the street which doesn't happen either.

Other than that the shootout is very realistic. Adrenaline running high and everybody running around does't make for good accuracy. And you need to shoot them several times when you're using just cast bullets with a weak powder charge.

Replace Baxter with Tom Selleck or even Al Pachino and you may just have the perfect western.

Also said the stuntman won an award for that. My favorite part was watching the bodies fly when they were shot. As unrealistic as it is, it managed to add a level of excitement that just folded in seamlessly without making you say to yourself "Oh would you look at this shite...".

I prefer Appaloosa's gunfight which was over very quickly with nearly everyone shot. I think the movie is better as well. Not sure I can explain why, just personal taste.

quote:

Everett Hitch: That was quick.
Virgil Cole: Yeah, everybody could shoot.
