The full version, all 3 hours and 49 minutes. This is true Gangster epic. Definitely a must watch for anyone who enjoys mob/crime movies.

When it was released the US, they completely butchered the film. Shortened it by almost 2 hours (I understand having to edit some filler in order for theaters to be able to have multiple showings per day, and I understand that certain scenes needed to be edited to ensure an R rating,
But 2 frickING HOURS???), and rearranged the scenes in chronological order without the permission/supervision of director Sergio Leone. fricking morons at Ladd

In the US, it was an epic flop, grossing only $5 Million in theaters on a $30 Million budget, but the full version is considered one of the greatest crime movies of all time.

this is great news. I've never actually seen it before. Tried watching on Kodi once and only got about 15 minutes in because of the shitty quality of the stream. Can't wait to watch this weekend.

I've never seen or heard of this movie, but I just watched the trailer and it looks epic. Can't wait to spend a whole afternoon watching it.

Another fun fact: it was the last movie Sergio Leone directed. He turned down directing The Godfather and then got screwed over when they cut his original production of Once Upon a Time in America and in his eyes destroyed the masterpiece he spent ten years working on.

quote:

Leone turned down the offer to direct The Godfather, in favour of working on another gangster story he had conceived earlier. He devoted ten years to this project, based on the novel The Hoods by former mobster Harry Grey, which focused on a quartet of New York City Jewish gangsters of the 1920s and 1930s who had been friends since childhood. The finished four-hour film, Once Upon a Time in America (1984), featured Robert De Niro and James Woods. It was a meditation on another aspect of popular American mythology, the role of greed and violence and their uneasy coexistence with the meaning of ethnicity and friendship. It received a raucous standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, but Warner Brothers felt it was too long. The studio drastically recut it down to two hours for the American market, abandoning its flashback structure for a linear narrative. This version suffered heavy criticism and flopped. The original version, released in the rest of the world, achieved somewhat better box office returns and a mixed critical response. When the original version of the film was released on home video in the US, it gained major critical acclaim, with some critics hailing the film as a masterpiece.
quote:

According to biographer Sir Christopher Frayling, Leone was deeply hurt by the studio-imposed editing and poor commercial reception of Once Upon a Time in America in North America. It was his last film.
Per Wikipedia.

Gangster movies are my thing. Even so, this is truly a masterpiece. I have it in my top 5 of all time.

It was fine but I didn't love it. I just didn't care about anything that was happening on the screen. Great score though

I watched it the other day. Even in the almost 4 hour version it feels like some things are missing.

Look, it's no Once Upon a Time in tbe West, but to have the full version, and a high quality, reliable stream... That's huge.

I've seen bits and pieces of it over the years, but never the true cut.

I also can't belive some have never heard of this film before... It's fricking epic Leone.

One of my all time favorite movies.

Truly is an epic masterpiece IMHO.

From beginning to end ... also was the big breakout role for a young beauty Jennifer Connelly.

Talk about an all star cast at the time. Wow, just wow.

Glad to know it is now on Netflix. I may rewatch it again soon.

probably because it's not as readily available to watch as other gangster movies like Goodfellas, Godfather, Casino, etc.

Like I said, I've seen a LOT of movies from every decade since movies became a thing, but this is not one that I've ever seen (other than the first 20 minutes or so). I've never seen it on cable and never seen it on the streaming services. So while I had heard about it for a number of years, I can understand why others may not have.

It’s good. Really good.

But it’s too long. I’d recommend dividing it up like a miniseries. I watched it in one sitting and Jesus it got old after a while.

Oh and in the current era of #MeToo, be prepared for a really uncomfortable scene that you might want to warn the missus about.
