I think the biggest difference is that Steppenwolf isn't the big enemy. He is but he really isn't. His dialogue was much better, and it added to him as a character.
Also, the tone is different. Bruce is way more hopeful in this one. They all agree to bring back Superman, and it is explained better how it happens. Lois is actually relevant in this, and not just an afterthought. Of three movies Cavill was in, this is actually his best performance and the character is the best here.
The little easter eggs were nice as well, and not completely over the top.
The only thing that I didn't get was that in the flashback big battle scene, it looked like a human Steppenwolf delivered the last blow to Darkseid. I don't know any of the backstory to Steppenwolf, but the helmet looked the same. Thought something was going to be there with that.
It is a much better movie. The first 40 mins are slow. After that it picks up. It flows well, and is a good movie. I will be curious how WB proceeds if this is a "hit."

Holy Crap. It's just so much. As a DC fan since I was six years old with thousands of comics still in storage...this was the epic experience I've been waiting for. I can't believe this was there all along and someone made the choice to deliver the theatrical cut. Yes, it was too long...and at the same time it flew by. I had to rewind and watch certain scenes a few times to take it in.
This was the Wonder Woman film I've been waiting to see. Wonder Woman is such a badass, the warrior is ever-present and at the same time still a bringer of light, truth, and warmth. The style and demeanor were perfect. The Amazons and Themyscira were finally given a bit of weight and consequence. I got more of the Wonder Woman I've been waiting to see in this film than both of her previous films. Sorry Patty.
Batman was so much better. Beyond being an inert puchline, everthing about him from the way he looked to the way he moved was a vast improvement. Everything about the action in this film was better.
Steppenwolf is actually a great villain. Formidable and dangerous, and yet sympathetic. His face actually relayed emotion and pathos. Darkseid is.
Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg...all made so much better by the extra story and time spent in their worlds.
Superman had about the same amount of time, but somehow his story seemed redeemed as well, not just a Deus ex machina one punch savior. Something to aspire to.
There is so much to unpack. I have to watch it again and take it all in. It's like a sumptuous feast that takes hours and hours. For the casua fan it may sound overwrought- and it absolutely is. There's too much of it and it's absolutely glorious.
Joss Whedon knew what he was doing. He knew that he had to destroy what came before...because it was too good. Russian family my arse.

I think that was Ares, the bad guy from WW

Feels more like The Black Order from Infinity War combined with Loki from Avengers. He’s bad arse but has depth to him. Not as much as Thanos, but he ran through those Amazons like paper and they are some bad bad bitches.

It was. He and Zeus were throwing shite down.
ETA: Ares should have gone for the head.

This was far and away a better version than what was put out in 2017. I don’t know that it does (or if anything can) wash away the stink of BVS and it certainly won’t allay the philosophical issues of hardcore DC fans with how Superman and Batman have been handled in past films. But this at least seems to breathe life back into the DCU corpse; I would watch a sequel to this version of the film.
ETA: I’ll also add this is by no means a perfect movie, just better than what was originally put out. There were some choices that felt heavy handed (the Amazon choir every time Diana did something was obnoxious, for example) or just didn’t really fit (Martian Man Hunter) but half a superhero movie is the villain and I was actually invested in Steppenwolf, Darkseid, the whole portrayal and set up for what is to come.

Although I feel there is an interesting story here, not sure WB is going to put up the money to finish it. Too risky.

Just from the opening scene, you can tell this is going to be a much better film (why Whedon thought that opening by showcasing his CGI Superman was a good thing is beyond me).
Loved the inclusion of the Jimmy Olsen from the Reeve films. His daily relationship with Lois was a great touch.
The extended version of Bruce contacting Aquaman worked so much better. The villagers worshiping Aquaman was great, even if Snyder pushed it a bit far.
The theft of the Amazonian Mother Box was probably the most epic scene of the film. I'd put it in an upper tier list of superhero film action scenes. Extremely well done.
Steppenwolf is so much better in this film. He's an actual character, not some generic villain stand-in. He has a real motive, both occupational and personal. And while his CGI isn't perfect, it's light-years better than Whedon's movie.
The entire first hour, focusing on Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, is really good. I had zero problems there.
Once you get to Flash and Cyborg, you can see why their backstories were jettisoned from the first film. Flash is okay, but a bit too silly. Cyborg is just a drag. Why give ultimate technical and financial power to a kid who cheats and steals? They brought the middle of the film almost to a halt.
The team getting together, the resurrection of Superman, that's where we get to the meat of the stuff that we'd seen before. It all works better here though. More coherent.
The final fight was good. The glimpse of Darkseid, Granny Goodness, and DeSaad made me yelp outloud. Kudos to Snyder for not leaving it way too much of a first installment. I felt that he left us with a great first chapter without a ridiculous cliffhanger.
The epilogue was satisfying and hilariously long. Snyder just said frick it and swung for the fences. It's obvious that he added a ton of new stuff there, just for the hell of it. Still great to see his "what if" doomsday scenario and the Martian Manhunter.
All in all, it's so much better than Whedon's corporate film. Better flow, cohesive, and just a better watch (even with the cumbersome slow parts.) No cringeworthy scenes like Pa Kent telling Clark to not be Superman or Luthor handing out Jolly Ranchers. Even the Wonder Woman girlpower scene refrained from going too far.
I hate to say it, but I'd love to see a third version of this film, three hours of just the Snyder stuff. He could've tightened this up into being his best DCEU film. But I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, as he's in a different state of mind now, as opposed to post BvS. Still, this is way better than I'd hoped.

It is Ares and the archer is Artemis.
It plays into the old gods.

Cyborg cheats and steals? Ok, I didn’t get that at all. I do think we spent to much time on his character.

The saddest and most frustrating thing that I took away from the movie was the setup for Affleck’s Batman movie.
For fricks sake, WB.

IMO, Cyborg has the most interesting powers and is the most interesting character in the movie. I wish we could have gotten a cyborg movie.
Also the Flash scene where he saves the chick is absolutely perfect. Great scene.
A couple of Wheedon scenes I actually miss. Flash staring at Cyborg on the roof top in shock is probably the main one. It was subtle yet hilarious and affective. Another one is Batman giving Flash a pep talk in the sewers. But definitely missed very little of the Wheedon cut.
Really there is so much potential with cyborg it’s unreal. So much emotion and character development potential there. He’s essentially a Robocop story as a high school/college age kid.

Snyder version is tons better IMO. Better Character development. It was a little long, but all the pieces fit alot better.

I was ok with the Cyborg backstory. As a dad, you would do anything to save your kid. Also, his dad was so uninvolved he probably didn't know his kid at all. He was the dad that swoops in with the big present. It worked for me and setup his test later when inside the motherbox

The biggest sore thumb in the franchise, to me, is Eisenberg as Luthor. As soon as he showed up in the epilogue I just sort of groaned; he’s so miscast in this movie and opposite the perfect Superman casting in Cavill, too.

Really curious as to what the WB execs were thinking during the entire process.
