So did they not get the tags for the wolves? Otherwise I don't see how you get in trouble for killing them even with the collars. Very hard to know. I can only assume, though it wasn't explicitly said, that they never got the tags
They said they did get tags. I think it would just be a huge image problem with the new governor killing famous wolves and he'd rather sweep it under the rug.

I thought this show was going to suck when I saw a trailer for it. I thought it would be campy and made for 40+ year old women who sit around drinking box wine (“it’s better than you think”) in their crappy house with their high school sweetheart husband who works some shitty job, but used to be “going places” and wishes they could have married a rich cowboy.
Well, I was right. It just took 4 seasons to really come into form. Show is losing its muster big time and is all in on the Beth is a badass bitch storyline, which is getting extremely stale.
All the relationships are stale: Beth and Jamie is probably the most stale. John and Beth is the same shite every season, same with Jamie and John. And then we have Kayce doing absolutely nothing. The bunkhouse guys are the best characters and really only because they are in the periphery.

Yeah, who knew she was a campaign manager among a financial wizard, stock broker, real estate broker, and all the other things she does flawlessly..
Oh, and add chief of staff to the list.

I figured they could have easily trapped some animals and put the tags on them instead of the log idea...seemed a little short sided.
Hell, they could have tagged a few cattle to keep the trackers moving while they needed to buy some time

mean he could've used that windfall to buy double the land and actually improve his net worth, real estate... The Duttons are about the dumbest financial minded people in Montana.
If I understand correctly the Duttons don't have a land problem they have a cash flow problem. Maybe I'm biased bc I come from farming family and still farm today and have raised cows but I THINK part of the point of the show is that it's no longer economical to use the land for agricultural purposes, which is what I think John would say it's meant for.
Raising cows on it cannot compete with the potential profits of a big fancy resort but that's not what the land is supposed to be from John's perspective not to mention it's presumably worse for the environment
Don't forget either that with more land comes higher property taxes
It's a dilemma farmers and more and more ranchers face all the time, sure you can probably sell your land to some big corporate entity (who usually will lease it out for Ag purpose but may also commercialize) for a large lump sum but that's it. That's all the money your family has going forward. There's no other income stream. At the same time that becomes tempting as margins become tighter and it becomes harder and harder to pay property taxes, mortgage if there is one, etc.
And yea they could get a lot of money for the land but it doesn't matter how much it is that money will run out one day whereas the land could be kept and income made off of it for far longer. 20+ generations. 30. Who knows how far it would go. That is what John wants but sees it being threatened by the outside forces who not only from his view will misuse the land but also raise expenses and taxes and on the whole area making it cause prohibitive for a lot of small time ppl (not John) to live there

Agree 100%. 2 hours of my life I will never get back. Also Beth drinking at bar and verbally abusing some random dude is played out. Seems like they do this every three or four episodes.

He was wrong here on both counts. There was no implication that Jamie raped Beth, and Jamie did not arrange her sterilization. It's that simply despite the word salads you keep coming up with.
You must be joking how you are moving the goal posts here.

Hard to understand why they named the baby John.
As hard to believe that they had time to name the baby as it only lived for an hour and a very crazy hour at that.

The windfall was for a small portion of his total land so he's still have a shite-ton of acres.

It was almost a billion dollars. If you can't make money off a billion dollars then I don't know what to tell you.

I 100% agree.

Yeah that's the sad part. I Totally agree with you.
I don't disagree with John's vision, or the synopsis you provided. It would be hard to decline that much money for a small portion of what you have, at least for me.

John said 2 things in the episode that stood out to me:
1. In his acceptance speech, he talked about how his family came to Montana 6 years before it was even a state.
2. In the car with Beth and Jamie, he said their family would be ashamed at what they had let happen to the land after what they did to get it.
John cares about legacy more than money. The land has been the Dutton’s for hundreds of years, and the thought of him being the one that loses it is the worst thing imaginable to him. Placing the land in a conservation easement could still ultimately lead to losing the ranch, but at least it would remain whole, and it would be the closest thing to him going out on his terms. If he can’t have it, no one can.

I just learned that this is the same actress that portrayed Claire Dutton in 1883. Man, what a difference a short dress makes.
I didn't notice this at all. Good catch.
Similarly, I noticed for the first time last night that the guy who played the cook in 1883 is also the same guy who assists Kayce as a Livestock agent

Not even sure what they’re doing with Kayce at this point, he’s doing stuff but has no relevance to the main plot. Ag officer spin off?
The driver probably betrays them by giving off intel, they telegraphed that one.
Both flashbacks were worthless but the Beth one was especially pointless. Did that tell us anything we needed to know ?

he raped her, and then when she got pregnant and needed an abortion, he arranged for the doctor to sterilize her so she can never have kids.
He didn’t rape her. It was Rip’s kid. The show has never implied that anything sexual happened between Jamie and Beth. No idea where you got that from.
And he didn’t arrange for the doctor to sterilize her. It was a requirement of the clinic. If she wanted an abortion, they were going to sterilize her in the process.

That guy is why every single popular show has a YouTube channel that makes a video for every episode called “(Insert Show) Episode xx - EXPLAINED.”
If you can’t follow a show like this without being confused about major plot points I don’t know what to tell you. This show is the opposite of subtlety. If it doesn’t happen right in front of your eyes, it did not happen.

She's abusive to everyone who isn't John, Rip, and Kayce, even if they don't deserve it.
I still remember her yelling at her assistant "DO I LOOK LIKE I NEED A frickING COFFEE RIGHT NOW??", and she fired her right after because she was justifiably rattled by that random blow up.
Good job writers. Beth is totally a likable person who should be the centerpiece of the show.
