ziggy is a whiteprivilege version of D from prior to season 1
spoiled, arrogant, and a braggart (at the worst times)

I just finished E2. Work got me falling behind. Looking forward to that part again.
I'm liking season 2 much more on my second watch.

I get the feeling Frank Sabotka is not a bad guy. Just goes along with what happens because that's the way things go there.
Almost the theme of the show. Things happen the way they happen. If not him it would be someone else.

Good take.
In every season, things are done by people because "that's how they do"
It's a recurring quote in the series that I think is important and relevant.

Hot Shots:
Just a couple of thoughts, I like how we see the "bad guys" doing surveillance of their own. Omar and his boy casing a mark, only to find the 2 girls already casing the same guy (he must be very sloppy
).
Stringer and his boys tailing Tighlman. I also didn't realize it was Butchie. Seems to know and respect Avon, obviously they do not know his relationship with Omar? Also I love Stringer shorting phone stocks because is pit n@#$az have 2 phones.
So, Valcheck listens to Prezbo finally and learns good police work matters after all. He must have some serious juice if Burrell is that scared of him.
I noticed in season 1 i think its the first or second episode, when Dee goes to the BBQ and Avon takes him off to talk, that String is kinda making a pass at Donette. Can't blame him.
Interesting that Nick is clueless about technology, doesn't know digital cameras have no film, but Ziggy rattles off all the specs. But man, what a freaking idiot, taking that guys pick. Reminded me of Barzini having his guy break the camera at the wedding if the Godfather.
Frank takes care of a dock worker that wants to quit, Ziggy probably wasn't supposed to see that.
And Bunk and Freeman knocking Jimmy down a peg was classic and Nice moment with Jimmy and Daniels.
Hard Case
Sweetheart deal for Daniels, Burrell definitely scared. Gets everything he wants from Burrell but can't get Rawls to let him have Jimmy. Maybe sticking 14 Jane Doe's on Rawls wasn't such a good idea after all? frick it, yes it was
Avon is a cold muther fricka, kills 5 guys to set up the guard and get a lighter sentence. And the cops know it too (5 to get you 10 that's the muther fricker that spiked it" DA says can't prove it so we take the case we can, again a bureaucrat cares more about his career than doing what is right. And the warden sums it up "if you can't win the war on drugs in a prison where can you win it?" EXACTLY
Ziggy apparently never saw Goodfellas. What a fricking clown.
Kima gets a taste of the game again arresting the frat douche. Great dual dinner scene with her and Daniels breaking the bad news to the counts in their lives. Before that Daniels is watching a dog show on TV and the announcer is talking about obedience. Just not in those 2 anymore than it is in Jimmy
Aimee and her tits get a lot of well deserved praise ( love Nicky copping a quick feel) but I must mention again what a smoke show Jimmy's ex wife is, she is drink her bathwater hot.
And am I the only that finds Beddie kinda cute? Not hot, but in that girl you knew growing up that you always wanted to sleep with kinda way?

she's the "cute chick who blooms late but is already stuck with a controlling deadbeat who knocks her up" type

That's how almost every corrupt official and bad guy sees himself, though. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I think he was a tough guy - on the outside. I mean, that work tends to draw tough, no nonsense guys. He also doesn't see himself as a bad guy. He's sees himself as "Robin Hood" at worst, and perhaps even truly a good guy.
That's definitely true when you consider that he gives people money when they're in dire straits. Just gives them a buck and tells them to order a beer and a shot at the bar. That's pretty cool, but I don't get how that is really sustainable long term, especially with everyone getting fewer and fewer hours.
And we are assuming that Frank uses his illegal money stash (from his secret dock container side jobs) to support the struggling guys, right?
quote:
Either way, I took his reaction as sincere. He goes into damage control, but he is not nearly as concerned about himself as he is about Ziggy and Nick or the work he has done for the union, the future of the docks, etc.
I do agree with that. I thought it was sincere as well. Just was curious as to what could've made him sick to the point of vomiting. But I guess it was an amalgam of the things we've talked about, and it all is falling onto his doorstep. So the legality of it (especially with the cops now involved), the morality of it...everything.

i think frank knows he's fricked at this point and just wants to hold on long enough, personally, to get the dredging approved
I forgot about that. That's a good point.
I liked his speech to his guys about all the different ports and how they're sort of out of the way for most shipping liners. So they have to be on point with their shite in order to keep drumming up business. And the dredging would help with that and allow more/bigger ships access.

Ziggy is that really good kind of character that you have to dislike for the right reasons. Well played on his part. Slimy, annoying and spoiled.

Exactly. It's definitely a recurring theme. It's one reason why Omar's "All in the game, yo" line resonates throughout the series. Because it is all in the game. Whether it's Wallace getting got by Bodie and Poot, or Omar robbing thugs, or people getting shot, or getting high, or cops drinking and being depressed, or two Polacks going at each other over a fricking church window....it's all in the game, and every single person/group has their different games that they play.

Unions have lots of sources for corrupt money. They get slush money payoffs to put a ship to the front of the line, not strike/slowdown during the busy season, payments to endorse candidates, etc. The smuggling money is probably lagniappe - but, yeah, one must assume that the money comes out of the enhanced war chest of the local. I mean, Frank's not paying that out of his own pocket, if that's the alternative.

I don't remember that, but it would make sense now. See if you can find that scene online (youtube usually has a TON of Wire scenes).

You think Zig doesn't know that his father takes care of people like that? I figure he's surely seen that happen before, not only because it's his dad (and people could tell him that it happens), but also because he's in that bar all the time too.

The way that he and Levy played that whole angle is amazing. And Avon knows to sit there and let Levy do the talking, and only respond simply when provoked in that meeting. If only De'Angelo was as smart as that.
I forgot just how prevalent B&B are in S2. When I watched the series, I watched S1 then waited a while before S2. Then once I picked it back up it had been a long time since. I watched S3-S5 in a fairly short period of time, but S1 and S2 were long gone by then, and I didn't remember much outside of certain storylines. I just remembered that it was all about the docks. But that isn't really true...B&B are all over the place so far.
And SFP, I liked S2 the first time I saw it, just not as much as other seasons (I rank them 1, 4, 3, 2, 5).

I'm not too familiar with how unions work, but how could Frank take "union money" and straight up give it to his workers when they're struggling and not getting hours? Or are you saying that's what that money is for..?
Because that doesn't seem like something that anybody would think is right. Especially people like union guys who are putting into the pot and care a lot about their money and where it goes.
Unless I am just looking at it wrong, which is possible..
