The sacrifice of Isaac on mount Moriah was symbolic of God the Father offering up his son Jesus as a sacrifice for the world
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
no it wasn't. that was just something they threw in later to make the story better.
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The wood that Isaac carried on his back was symbolic of the cross.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah, that never happened
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plus God had no plans of Abraham killing Isaac and instead offers a lamb instead.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and you know this how?
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, the lamb sacrifice being symbolic of Jesus, the lamb of God.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jews only called him that to try and tie him into their mythology
How do you know your answers are right???

I always thought the Abraham/Isaac story was somehow designed to indicate the move away from human sacrifices which were likely present in ancient cultures in the area (and, of course have existed in other cultures long after that time period).
Well Israel didn't exist until God chose Abraham and decided to make him the father of an entire nation, so I'm sure he had witnessed or at least knew of it in his travels among the people's that worshiped Baal and Ashtaroth. So since Judaism hadn't existed until then and the Law wasn't coming until Moses, there were no real people of God to," move away from" human sacrifices.

I'm a bit confused...he was tested with the ultimate sacrifice, only to be told not to do it at the very last second. This was a test to make sure he was worthy of leading god's country....so he then takes his people into famine and then marches them to Egypt where they become slaves?
You are more than a bit confused. Abraham was asked to sacrifice Isaac, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt.

Just chiming in late. That Sodom and Ghomora bit was very politically correct. There were plenty of sexual deviants, including homosexuality. The men looking for the angels were begging Lot to send the men out so that the mob could have sex with them. This show chose not to play up the homosexual part of that story.
Yeah I noticed that too.

Who led them to Egypt in the first place? IIRC, during the show, after the stopped at the last second sacrifice, they kind of jumped forward 40 years to where the Israelites are now enslaved by Egyptians...then we meet Moses before he goes on his little vision quest and returns to lead them out of Egypt.

Joseph was thrown into a pit by his brothers and later sold into slavery. He ends up in an Egyptian prison where he has the ability to interpret dreams. Pharaoh has a dream and Joseph interprets it for him about 7 years of plenty, followed by 7 years of famine. Ultimately Joseph's brothers and father have to come to Egypt for food and end up moving there. Once the pharaoh that is friends with Joseph dies, a pharaoh that is unfavourable to the Jews replaces him. This leads to the Jews being turned into slaves. There they stay for 400 years until Moses frees them.

IIRC it was Isaac's kids that went to Egypt. That was part of the whole thing with Jospeh's brother selling him into slavery in Egypt and then a famine came and they had to go to Egypt where Joseph was a big whig of some type and had showed the Pharaoh how to store grain during the good harvests, etc. etc.
Slavery (at least as practiced by the Israelites) is one of the things that seem to be getting a white washing in the series, along with offering up daughters to be gang raped as discussed above. If I had to guess I'd say they skip over the part with God getting PO'd with the Israelites for not killing every man woman and child in Canaan like he told them to. Never know though, I guess we'll see next week)
edited to correct: Joseph not Jacob sold to slavery by his brothers.

I don't remember that at all...did they just skip over that part? Maybe I wasn't paying attention...

Yes they skipped over all of that.

That's likely because there is a difference between being homosexual and raping strangers. The latter is what the men of Sodom were seeking.
It is unlikely, for obvious reasons, that every man in Sodom was a homosexual.

I don't think anyone is implying that all the men in Sodom were homosexuals, but since we have the word," sodomy" and it's linked to certain homosexual activities, it is certain that Christians in the past considered the sin of homosexuality a major factor in the destruction of the city.
