Just saw this at the Rave in IMAX. FANTASTIC! I seriously enjoyed this movie! Will see again.

He's Thanos. He's a bad motherfricker. He's basically out destroying planets to impress the female embodiment of Death. If you listen to his dialogue he mentions "to court Death." Basically he had no plans of letting Loki rule Earth. He wanted him to frick it all up and kill everyone as sort of a tribute to Death.
The sequel is suppose to go more cosmic and feature more of the cosmic based heroes. They are trying to get together at least a Guardians of the Galaxy movie and maybe a InHumans movie as well. Whedon has said he'd do the third one if he can use the Civil War storyline, which would be some epic shite.

I love Civil War but wouldn't want it in the last movie especially if they put in killing Cap. I would still want Whedon doing any Avenger film though.

Yeah the Civil War angle could bring in a lot of the other side characters as well. For those that don't know the Civil War broke out because of some legislation that required all superheros to make their true identities known. If you've seen The Incredibles, they basically hijacked this as well as pretty much their entire plot from the Marvel Universe. I believe Captain America and Hulk were against it (So were Spiderman and Wolverine), Thor was like frick this I have Asgard, and Tony Stark and a few others like the Fantastic Four were for it.
Needless to say some of the seeds for this were planted with Fury's interaction with The Council.
BTW, I loved Harry Dean Stanton showing up out of nowhere and I loved his interaction with Bruce - son you have a disease.
