***MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS****
***********BE WARNED***********
I think what you are talking about though would be a completely different story. And one that puts the player more in the role of an observer instead of real-time emotional participant, which the game successfully did, even if people hated the feeling.
I mean that is literally the point here. You are pissed in the way Ellie is pissed at losing this important person in her life in a brutal and unexpected way(even if she has conflicted feelings about him cause of his actions, actions which robbed her of her agency and sense of purpose, conflicted but still loved, similar to how many people felt about Joel after the first game).
Interestingly, Ellie's rage-induced and whirlwind of dehumanization and retaliation toward the perpetrators in reaction to Joel's death was incredibly prescient in that it's EXACTLY how so many fans also reacted. They went beyond being angry in the game's framework, they actually went into fits of uncontrollable rage IRL, dehumanizing the creators, and seeking to destroy the reputation and everything about the game any way they could...much like Ellie. The game than asks isn't Abby literally doing what you did for Joel? And if no one can stop the cycle how can healing begin and humanity ever return? Individually or collectively?
I feel like even years after a lot of people are still in the bargaining phase of grief and trying to rationalize ways to change the story into one where they get to keep Joel, or at least lessen the blow. But that becomes a different narrative, with a lesser impact, and to me, a much less interesting story.

SPOILERS FOR PART II
I think Part II kind of turns the old cliche and tired narrative of hero gets to ride out into the sunset or gets a hero’s death and flips it on its head. Instead we see just how brutal the world truly is and that nobody including Ellie or Joel is guaranteed a happy ending. Joel did not hide the fact that he had done awful shite in the past and will continue to do awful shite. Eventually all that shite catches up to you and your luck runs out. Same happened to Abby losing all her friends including Owen and the same happened to Ellie. Of course it’s more than just revenge bad as we saw with the Ellie and Joel backstory it’s about being able to forgive something that Ellie was never able to do for Joel because Abby took that from her.

And that is a unique part of the medium for story telling. So I get your point there.

Can someone tell me why Last of Us 2 got so much hate?
because the narrative didnt play out the way most people wanted it to.
the second one had a very good story, its just not what was expected. From a technical (graphics and gameplay) standpoint the game is stellar.

It's got everything it could possibly need to be successful, so I have high hopes:
- A story being adapted that is actually very good on its own merits
- The original writer assisting with the adaption and writing it as well
- A prestige showrunner that passionately loves the source material, but understands the differences in mediums
- A slew of highly regarded directors helming most of the episodes.
- Great casting(yes, including Ellie)
- A budget for HBO only exceeded by House of The Dragon(12+ million an episode rumored for TLOU)

reminded me of Alien 3 where these characters I loved are wiped out in the beginning so instead of engaging in the story and the themes I just spend time being pissed they are gone. IDK...in time I grew to appreciate that movie
frick Alien 3
