BUMP
Just finished the doc. I think something is up with the stepfather and that he isn't getting nearly enough attention in the documentary.
I also feel like they glossed over the statement made by Brendan's cousin. She was fourteen at the time of the murder and it's not impossible to think that children would make up a story for attention or to get another relative in trouble.

I'm in episode 10 now..........
I don't think these two would even have the metal capacity to perform this crime. Certainly not Brendan.

Came across this AMA on reddit from a former resident of that county. Pretty interesting read
quote:
I am from Manitowoc County, and in fact, my in-laws' property abuts that of the Avery junkyard. I no longer live there myself, having moved about an hour and a half away, but still travel to the area regularly and of course have many family and friends who still reside there. I've just finished watching these, and I have to say it's been an incredibly surreal experience. Manitowoc County is small, and even if you don't KNOW know someone, you pretty much at least have some idea of who they are in a peripheral sense. This show is full of faces, names and places I've known or known of my entire life. Just to illustrate what a microcosm the area is (aside from my in-laws being the Averys' neighbors, obviously): My mother used to be married to a man who was earlier married to/had children with a woman who is now married to former Sheriff Kocurek. I went to parochial school with the daughter of and attended birthday parties at the home of Judge Fox.
I also have to say that the corruption being laid bare here is not surprising to me. If it's where you're from or where you reside, it's well-known that once the 'system' in Manitowoc County is aware of your name and face, you're pretty much SOL as far as ever getting a fair shake. One other thing that I think this story just screams is about the reality of the class war. Every single one of the players here is white. Rural poor/uneducated vs. influential/educated. There are so many things I could say about all of this; it's difficult to articulate all of the thoughts I'm having about it right now.

This case is going to get cracked wideeeeeee open.

About 3 episodes in. This show is pure insanity. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with the amount of police and legal corruption and cover up that appear to be going on.

Have you read the theory about the German guy who moved into an apartment close by the salvage yard?

Can you link me? I saw something about a German guy in the link above from the person who lived in the county. First I had seen that.

This thing is only getting started.

This whole documentary is a microcosm of the system being able to exploit poor/uneducated people. That entire seen where Brendan's basically being coached into telling the two detectives exactly what they want to hear is pretty fricking sickening. Then a few episodes later it's pretty clear that Len Kachinsky was never actually trying to prove his clients innocence (and then gets a third party to get him to draw a diagram of the crime).
That reddit AMA post is a pretty good read as far as the stories that people from that county have to tell. It's not just the Avery family that has had a rough time with the system in that county.

Wow didn't realize they already had a subreddit dedicated to the case. And people are already e-mailing Dean Strang trying to find out ways they can help. This is for serious

This shite could seriously blow up and it hasn't even been a week since the series came out. You've got the likes of Alec Baldwin live tweeting while he's watching this series (He even contacts Len kachinsky on twitter). Plus, you've got a subreddit calling into question Mike Halbach's involvement in the case LINK.
This could easily grab the same national attention that SERIAL podcast did for Adan Syed.

Yes, the treatment of Brenden in particular is gut wrenching.
These people are given power by the state and can abuse it with no legitimate checks and balances.

Anyone see Ken Kratz's private law firm on Yelp? Dude is getting crushed by people the last few days
quote:
Len Kachinsky writes:
The decision of the Court of Appeals on January 30, 2013 in Case No. 10 AP 1305 included the following remarks:
¶11 Dassey draws no viable link between Kachinsky’s actions and any demonstrable detriment to him. While Dassey contends that at least as of April 23, 2006, Kachinsky and O’Kelly began planning to gather evidence favorable to the State and to extract a confession from him against his will, he identifies no
“adverse effect” at the May 4 suppression hearing. Kachinsky testified at the Machner hearing that he hoped to get the best deal he could for Dassey and that, knowing Dassey’s family was pressuring him, he mentioned the possibility of a plea to the media to “send a message” to them that Dassey might have to “take a legal option that they don’t like.” He also concluded that Dassey was properly Mirandized before the March 1 questioning; the trial court agreed and successor counsel likewise saw no meritorious Miranda issue. ....
¶13 Kachinsky was long gone before Dassey’s trial or sentencing.
Dassey has not convinced us that Kachinsky’s actions amounted to an actual conflict and that Kachinsky’s advocacy was adversely affected, such that it was detrimental to Dassey’s interests. He is not entitled to a new trial or hearing.

I'm on episode 7 right now, still haven't decided if I think he's guilty or not yet.
I know one thing. I'd like to do very bad things to those investigators who interrogated Brendan.

I'm 4 episodes in, about to start #5, and I am livid at the insane amount of transparent injustice.
But I will say, I'm starting to lose empathy for the kid. He's so fricking dumb, It's beyond words and I almost don't care what happens to him anymore.
I'm starting to believe he would not even be upset or comprehend if he were to go to prison. Probably would be all "Aww shucks, I ain't gonna get out to see my afternoon cartoons anymore. Will I at least get some candy while I'm in prison?"
Anyone else feeling this way?
