To me, there a big difference between having a star in a minor role that dies soon and a billed star that actually does die too soon.

Haven't seen gravity, but doesn't Clooney die early on in the movie, and he was billed has a reason to see the movie.

It's like Laurence Fishburn, he does a lot of these cameo/bit roles where he shows up and dies pretty quickly.

Going way back, To Live and Die in LA, William Petersen died unexpectedly and out of nowhere, even though it was toward the end.

He wasn't "the star." LL Cool J had more of a role than him.

When big actors do cameos you know they are going to die.

That hot babe and the Shark were the stars.

Pulp Fiction- John Travolta (Even though he was kind of "resurrected" at the end because of the whole non-linear storyline)

Heath Ledger- Monster's Ball

Charlie Sheen- Young Guns

Johnny Depp- A Nightmare on Elm Street (If someone were to see this for the first time today, Depp's gruesome death would probably be pretty damn unexpected.)

They get Bryan Cranston to bring in an audience and kill him 10 minutes into the movie so we can watch that dipshit from kick arse for 2 1/2 hours

Psycho - Janet Leigh

1st time this was done to an audience. At the time, this was unthinkable. Even worse, the way it was done.
Hence the ad campaign for the film:

Of course Hitch didn't want theatres to admit anyone after the picture started - he didn't want someone arriving 10 minutes into it and saying, "Where the hell is Janet Leigh?"

Janet Leigh's death was quite the shock in Psycho but it doesn't really happen early in the film. Her death scene occurred at the 47-minute mark of the movie. There's less than an hour left to go in the film when it happens.
