Did that tank at the box office? We went and saw it 3 or 4 times, and seems the theater was always relatively crowded.

According to IMDB it grossed about $17.4m in the US on a $15m budget. I imagine with marketing and distribution that it was possibly a loss and certainly wasn't a big money maker. It definitely gained a lot of popularity and a cult following as time passed far after the initial release.

Eta: I guess people might not consider it "bombing" because it was never a big budget block buster in the first place.

I knew it wasn't a blockbuster. Far from it, actually, and has a huge cult following. Just wondering how we're defining "tanked" as I remember it being somewhat popular. But then I was in college and smoking a lot of weed at the time, so most of my friends were stoners and we all loved it.

Ted Turner would later try to manufacture a "classic" by constantly showing A Christmas Story during the holiday season, and he seems to have at least partially succeeded.

It was a classic prior to Turner's company running it non-stop. That's why they chose it for their looped programming.

He turned it into a meme.

John Wick just about earned quadruple it's budget. It cost $20 mil to make and it made $78 mil. Not exactly a bomb.

Has anyone mentioned Shawshank?

Unless you hate relentlessly charming prison inmates and the triumph of the human spirit, you probably love "Shawshank." Back in 1994, the movie was met with solid-if-not-stellar reviews but drowned out by less conventional critical darlings that sprung up, including "Pulp Fiction," "Forrest Gump" and "Quiz Show." And at the box office, the numbers were paltry as the film failed to recoup its $25 million budget upon its initial release. But due to of good word-of-mouth and, perhaps more importantly, ridiculously frequent airings on cable bottom feeder TNT, "Shawshank" made like Andy Dufresne, crawling through a river of s**t and coming out clean on the other side.

The Princess Bride was a flop? What were people thinking?

I'm sure the title scared off boys.

Vertigo was considered a box office flop and is generally somewhere betwee. 1-3 on AFI and BFI best lists.

I'd never heard of it before catching it on cable. Love it and will watch it any time it's showing. Never saw it when high and that makes me sad.

Drug dealers, rappers, musicians, athletes, etc. that are trying to raise themselves out of poverty/imprisonment/lack of an education love Tony Montana.

I don't understand why a cable channel doesn't loop the original Halloween for 24 hours on the holiday.

Those one movie marathons are the laziest idea any TV executive ever had. Hate when they do that on a channel and preempt something regularly shown.

Halloween isnt Christmas, people arent off from work and sitting around the house with family all day. People have to work all day, hurry home and get kids into costumes and then are walking the neighborhoods. Doesnt seem worth it to loop a movie all day for that.

What day does Halloween fall on the next two years? The weekend. Perfect opportunity.

Grandma's Boy and The Other Guys are two of the most underrated one liner movies imo

As emoney noted, Shawshank Redemption is the best example, flopped at the box office, now in the conversation for most popular movie ever.
