It's A Wonderful Life is only universally loved now because it was the only movie they showed during Christmas for years and it became synonymous with the holiday season.

Had that not happened, it probably wouldn't be known.
It would still be known to film buffs

The reason it was shown so often is that it had gone into public domain in 1974. This meant TV stations could show it as many times as they wanted, leading to the Cheers bit:

Norm: What's on TV?

Woody: It's A Wonderful Life.

Carla: That moldy oldie again? It's already been on five times this week.

Woody: Yep. On Channel 37 from now until New Year's, it's a wonderful month.

However in the '90s due to various copyright laws I won't pretend to understand, IAWL somehow was taken out of PD, so it only shows up once a year now.

FWIW TV is what made a classic out of The Wizard Of Oz. It had sold a lot of tickets on first release, just not enough to cover its huge production cost. Then in 1956 it was shown once a year on TV, and this became a tradition for many families.

Ted Turner would later try to manufacture a "classic" by constantly showing A Christmas Story during the holiday season, and he seems to have at least partially succeeded.

I recently read an article about how Don't Tell Mom The Baby-Sitter's Dead bombed at the theaters but became a cult-classic due to constantly being replayed on HBO.

Donnie Darko made $500,000 at the US box office. It became popular once on DVD.

I've never particularly like this movie, but I just expect to see it at Christmas time.

Children of Men only made $35 million at the box office compared to its $75 million budget, but was well received by critics.

This may be the biggest one mentioned so far. The fact that Cuaron wasn't nominated that year for best director may be the biggest snub I can think of in Oscar history. It was perfectly directed, shot, and told. You would be very hard pressed to find a film that was better directed. Granted, I think the Academy eventually saw it and apologized once Gravity came out, but it's ridiculous he wasn't really nominated for his true masterpiece.

Big Trouble in Little China was a box office failure. That movie is a freaking legend now.

I don't understand why a cable channel doesn't loop the original Halloween for 24 hours on the holiday.

It did awful at the theaters, but I laughed my arse off the first time I saw it on DVD.

Office Space-- Tanked but admittedly was put out to pasture without much of a chance by its studio.

Did that tank at the box office? We went and saw it 3 or 4 times, and seems the theater was always relatively crowded.
