It's just slow, because he never had a movie budget before and wanted to get so much into it. The visuals for the time are spectacular though.

It's hard to compare it to Alien because it jumped from pure horror movie to action horror, so had a very different feel. Although a sequel, it almost felt like a re-imaging of the property.

Agreed.
I just didn't know if I would classify it as a remake, as I think they didn't really look at the first movie as source material at all. Pretty sure they were 100% comics for that Dredd.
