In the reverse Midsommer, the man discovers the girl is cheating on him so she is paralyzed, chopped up and stuffed into a bear corpse and then burned alive. And then he is named king.

Could that movie have seen the light of day?

I wanted to like this movie. And while it was definitely pretty creepy at times, overall it just wasn’t very good. Even borderline sucked. I remember it feeling like it was waaaaay too long.

You left out a key part of the ending, the dude was raped.

You don’t even need to get to the end, the entire set up of the movie would be “problematic”

Women is falling out of love with a clinging boyfriend who uses a personal family tragedy to invite himself to a girls trip to Europe. During that trip to Europe the boyfriend partakes in several mushroom trips. Laughing and enjoying himself while her friends are being murdered.

I watched it not that long ago. Really enjoyed it. Creepy as shite and looks incredible. Then I dug around the internet and saw how people thought the girl was a hero.

The sex of the sacrificial victims didn't really matter. They just needed a certain number of outsiders for the ritual. I don't think the cult's plan was to make Dani the May Queen from the get go.

The short answer to your question is probably no, at least not in today's political climate. That said, there have been dozens of films over the years where a female virgin was killed as a sacrificial offering.

Disagree. The mural shows a May Pole. That's all. Dani wasn't even originally supposed to be part of the trip. Her boyfriend felt sorry for her and brought her along at the last minute. The others were all selected to be sacrifices. Had Dani not won the May Pole competition, she would not have been queen, and she would've been murdered like all the others.

Are you under the impression that movie is siding with Pugh's decision? She's presented as having been driven out of her mind. The audience is not made to feel like the dude deserves his fate the way you seem to be suggesting. Her being named queen is not in any way a happy or positive ending. She is at best trapped in a cult. It's just one more horrifying nail in the nightmare coffin.

Midsommer and Hereditary

I think they were very similar in the core concept that in both films a small group of people were chosen, manipulated, and eventually killed by a larger group. They never stood a chance. Those movies where everyone around the main characters is revealed to be part of the conspiracy always are very disturbing.

No he wasn't.

No one forced him to do anything. He had a choice at every step and chose poorly each time.

Agreed. I remember leaving the theater extremely disappointed.

Man I don't know. The director made Christian into an a-hole and there is a scene that was cut (For time purposes not theme) that makes him look even worse. Christian is supposed to be gaslighting her and being an example of a person with no empathy.

quote:

Her being named queen is not in any way a happy or positive ending.

Wrong.

This whole scene invalidates your argument:

That was the empathy Dani had been looking for since the literal opening scene of the movie and all the trauma it created. The village was the one place where Dani was finally able to engage in a cathartic dumping of emotions because she finally found a place empathetic to her pain.

I like Ari Aster's horror movies but the biggest problem with them is he tries to make them too elevated and it's preachy as frick. You're trying to give him an out by pretending like he's playing it straight when he's really trying to present a movie about toxic relationships (due to the male's behaviors) just like he was trying to make a movie about toxic family dynamics in Hereditary. He has a message and that message is about toxic masculinity and gaslighting and all the buzzwords about how these create trauma in females.

That's why the whole "what if the sex of the parties was reversed?" is actually a very compelling argument. It exposes that AA isn't playing this whole dynamic exactly fair and has clear gender-based messaging.
