I'm going to wait until page 2 to comment on the specifics and just stick to what some of the trailers have shown

In a nutshell: Big Let down. I'm glad it's on HBO Max so I didn't pay to see it in a theater

Revolutions looks like a masterpiece compared to Resurrections

It relied heavily on flashback scenes which only magnifies how good the original actors were compared to this film.

I didn't like the Morpheus explanation at all. Completely sucked.

None of the fight scenes were as "Epic" as any of the trilogy films.

I'm still processing so I'll be interested in other peoples thoughts

I haven’t seen it yet, but this sorta figures into why I haven’t seen many movies this year.

The vast majority are non-sensical, cash-grab nostalgia bait.

Initially, I was hopeful due to Keanu’s involvement, but I guess the dude is just a nice guy who did Lana Wachowski a favor.

that says it all

chalk this up to a movie I won't watch unless there is simply nothing else to do

If you have HBO Max I still recommend you watch it to form your own opinion.

One thing I'll add to my OP is they spent way too much time in the first half of the film establishing new characters and took too much Time having NEO and Trinity in a state of confusion trying to figure out who they really were.

Will Time Warner ever make any profits on their movies again since they have been releasing all of them on HBO Max?

Matrix Resurrections is supposed to be the last movie they do that for.

I think they were banking on box office returns being enough to break even and that new HBO max subscribers would be net profit. But that hasn’t really materialized.

The Suicide Squad didn’t even make back its nominal budget during the theatrical run (budget: 180 million, box office: 160 million).

And if you use a very favorable break even point formula (2x budget) for Dune, it *might* have broken even in theaters by this point. (Budget 165 million, x2 = 330 million, total box office currently: about 380 million).

5.5/10 for me. Slightly above average. The second half was a slog.

That ending seemed to lend itself to a sequel but Lana Wachowski said it’s not the beginning of a trilogy.

Thoughts:

-I didn't feel like I was in a Matrix movie until the motorbike/bomb scene 20 mins before the end. That felt worthy.

-While the OG trilogy had scenes heavy in dialog, it was always cryptic & seemingly in riddles (Oracle, Architect, etc). This movie had countless conversations that unnecessarily explain every single thing on & offscreen for the audience.

-I was really hoping the cinematography would take a leap forward for this once-revolutionary franchise and match the level of atmospheric awe & eye-candy that recent films like Dune or Blade Runner 2049 delivered. Sadly, this cinematography is stuck in the early 2000s, only more HD.

-I found no "bold" political/LGBT+ agenda/narrative that previous big Matrix thread that warned of.

If it didn't have the pacing issue, would it have been a lot better?

Considering the Wonder Twins haven't made a good movie since, well, The Matrix, what else were we to expect? They are shitty directors that have a long career after catching lightning in a bottle. They are proof that you can indeed ride on your laurels, even if those laurels were a one and done affair.

I found a list of their movies, ranked from worst to best.

While I disagreed with the list that said Bound was better than the Matrix (I mean, it's a better DRAMA than the Matrix, but it is absolutely not a better MOVIE), the #3 movie on the list was Speed Racer.

So yeah, that tells me a lot.

I can't tell if they would have been better film makers if they had never made the Matrix and weren't constantly trying to recapture that, or if the Matrix was just a lot of good luck.

good luck. competent directors would at least put out one other good movie in their catalog.

i was really hoping Neo was taking blue pills because he wanted to, and he was trying to escape reality cause trinity died or something. in the end its a matrix sequel that was a disappointment for me which is part of the nostalgia i guess.

Got distracted by boredom watching the movie and came here to see other thoughts.

That should give you an idea.

Don't get your hopes up. The movie is worth a watch but don't go in thinking it will be as good as the first 2.

Exactly why I'm here. This is difficult to get through.
