I really have to re-watch this film. I hated it the first time but after all the high praise here I have to give it another go.

I made the mistake of renting it instead of buying it.

Russell Crowe was perfectly cast. Unfortunately, probably too old now for a sequel.
I think Crowe could pull off an old sea captain role. They’d have to put him on keto for a few months and trim him up, but he’s still got the acting skills for it. An aging Captain Aubrey after a lifetime at sea would be amazing.

But I think the current Hollywood would ruin it, though. They would have to flood it with forced diversity and girl power, and make the bad guy a symbol of some modern day political evil.

This board is so obsessed with it though it may have single handedly made the movie overrated

He definitely could play old Jack Aubrey. Bring Paul Bettany back as Maturin. The two of them are still perfect casting. The problem isn't Crowe's age or weight or anything, the problem is, IMO, you can't jump from young Captain Jack to his older self. You have to tell the stories from the books to get to where Jack is in life. Plus there's so much stuff in the book series that the movie wasn't tasked with presenting. Spies, traitors, murder, assassins, shipwrecks, marooning, naval campaigns, sea battles, getting captured, Napoleon, revolutions. You also have to touch on Jack's domestic life, wife, kids, estate, etc. They should do a series. I think you could do it justice in three seasons, about eight or so episodes a season. Crowe can play old Jack in later episodes.

I don't think they would. They didn't ruin Black Sails.

I'd love to see this in the theater.

One of my favorite theatre experiences that I’ve ever had. I’d never heard of the movie but my dad took me to see it when I was twelve in 2003. We both fell in love.

I recorded it to watch it again the other day and the dialog was tough to hear - like Christopher Nolan bad. Where my TV volume is normally around 15, I had it on 30 and could barely make it out. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't remember the sound mix being an issue the first couple times I watched it.

Great movie, BTW

I love the movie. Tried reading the books. It’s written like an old English classic. Couldn’t get through it

Wish we could have seen the sequels

I hate to say it, but if you don’t recall the sound mixing being bad, it is likely your hearing that has cratered. I don’t recall a big issue with it on TV and certainly not in a theatre setting.

I went to watch it twice while on the big screen in 2003..

Much like I went to Goodfellas, Shawshank, etc..with the GF, my dad, my chums, solo,etc..

Master & Commander so good on the monster screen.

It was part of Russell Crowe’s ridiculously impressive stretch of performances/movies.

1997 - L.A Confidential
1999 - Mystery Alaska, The Insider
2000 - Gladiator, Proof of Life
2001 - A Beautiful Mind
2003 - Master and Commander
2005 - Cinderella Man

Just rewatched it for the first time in a while. Great movie. Best scene is when they surprise the French ship while hanging the flag.

Pretty funny. Had same experience mostly because of British accents.

It is more surprising it is so good because it is two a couple of novels mashed together.

Most of it is cobbled together from a book where the bad guy isn't French... but American. Which, given the Americans in the book aren't the most sympathetic characters for the most part, probably would have tanked it even more in the US.

The movie itself is damn near immaculate. Everything works exactly as it should. Acting, writing, directing, sound... nothing in the movie falls short.

I've posted about this previously:

The majority of the movie is taken from the novels The Far Side of the World and Master and Commander. But there is stuff in the movie from thirteen of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books.
