The film stars Gary Oldman as Hollywood screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz and tells the story of how he came to write Citizen Kane. From the looks of the film, Fincher is trying hard for an Oscar. I hope he gets it.

Ehh idk about that. This is a very personal story to him (his father wrote the screen play) and he’s been trying to get this made for a while now.

I’m sure he’d love to win an Oscar but I don’t think that was his thought process going into that

I love how Netflix, et al are giving filmmakers and tv folks the opportunities to put out stuff like this. The quality has been hit or miss like anything else, but with the big screen firmly in the blockbuster camp (pre COVID of course), it's nice that there is an outlet for this other stuff.

I believe they were working on a relatively small production budget, so agree with the previous poster about this being a passion project for Fincher. Netflix was all over it, but for a price.

On a personal level, I just started a project with the DP on Mank and he is going to make our sets looking really good if that trailer is any indication.

Ill be honest....anybody who saw that trailer and is saying "looks amazing!" is basing it solely on the people involved.

Fincher is in my top 2.....and it may well be great. But that trailer didnt "look amazing"

Projecting your opinion onto others based on nothing but your own opinion is not a good example of honesty...

It pains me that I have to watch this film on my home TV. There was nothing like going to the theaters to see a Fincher movie.

Movie was a HUGE disappointment. Only about a third of the movie is as advertised (Mank writing Citizen Cane), and it isn't as interesting as I expected. Another third is just about Mank's assorted relationships throughout Hollywood. None of those relationships are really developed enough for me to care about any of the people that he's interacting with. The rest of the film is a brutal ~40 minute stretch of Mank following elections and promoting socialism to Hearst and Meyer.

It has a run time of 130 minutes and it felt like it was twice that long. I couldn't wait for it to end. Easily the worst I've seen from Fincher. I get that his dad wrote it, so making the film meant a lot to him. But I think that it blinded him to the script being a mess.

I really liked it.

I’m a sucker for history, and old Hollywood history and this was fun to dive into that world

It paired nicely with Citizen Kane (obviously) which I watched last night

Great film. Beautifully shot.

Minor spoiler...

The addition of the cue dots was an awesome touch.

I really had no real sense of the entire controversy until leading up to this release listening to a bunch of podcasts that talked about it to hype up Mank and then watching Citzen Kane for the first time

I’ve dived in so much and I still feel like there’s so much story left on that bone I was riveted the whole time watching Mank but maybe that was a product of all of the above

Watched it last night. Enjoyed it. Gary Oldman was good as usual. Dialogue kept you alert. I thought it was shot well. I visited Hearst Castle a few years ago. The dining hall and entertainment room were depicted very similar to what I saw.
