Just wanted to drop in and find out if anyone else made the wise decision to see this film on it's one and only showing.
What an experience. I don't really want to go into too much detail and tarnish the naked mind of anyone who might see this strong offering from young director Panos Cosmatos.
Part homage to 70s cult classic horror films, part fever dream, part revenge thriller.
Linus Roache blended into his role quite impressively. (Tough for any Law and Order regular to do).
Nicholas Cage and Andrea Riseborough both gave wicked performances.
The analog gore was masterful. Some of the outdoors shots had this retro nostalgic feel that reminded me of the original "Solaris."

It’s got a 95% on RT right now. Where’s you see it? I’m in Los Angeles and it’s not even playing out here.

Missed your post. It was a one night showing. I would wait and see if winds up at a drive thru; it would be worth the wait.

It’s available for rent on streaming services. I thought it was pretty good! A little slow in the last act though, similar problem in Beyond The Black Rainbow. Panos Cosmatos always has amazing visuals and atmosphere.

SPOILERS
Pans
Red and Mandy's banter in the beginning is a bit hokey. The Erik Estrada joke especially; 21st century pop culture humor in 1983? naw man
Extremely heavy on the exposition at times, particularly when Jeremiah Sands basically explains his complete essence.
When burning Mandy alive, the shots of the motley crew were just way too self conscious. The panning of them in the van was sufficient.
The mysticism that fueled the first half of the film had to be eliminated to legitimize the 2nd half. Various plot devices and uses of symbolism held it together but explains why the 2nd half is less enthralling.
Picks
Superb acting performances all the way around. Thought Cage's bathroom scene was totally apropos considering the context. Linus Roach was also superb, tho at times failed by the writing and direction.
The cinematography was wicked good. Even knowing what to expect and considering how conscious the film was of itself at times, Cosmatos delivered. Ive already mentioned some of what I liked itt. The reds following Cage in the Bronco were sick. Various shots throughout the film were memorable; the shot of the chapel in the cavern.
Music was really good tho I probably enjoyed the King Crimson song during the opening credits more than any piece of the score. Hearing that and seeing that cult 70s horror font had me jonesin.
Last thing Ill mention before I write a novel; A friend and I were debating on what was in the jar he tasted before he went full super saiyan. Obviously it was the special batch of LSD but I wondered why it looked like gray cream. I still maintain that it was a plot device for it to look so gray and thick (LSD should never look like that). Cosmatos wanted it to resemble human ashes to help glue together the 2 parts of the film. (Feel free to opine if you have another theory). Remember, the cocaine also looked gray.

Shorter Cosmatos: LSD in large quantities is bad, mkay

watched this last night.
SPOILERS
Loved it.
The plot is very simple. It isn't a story driven movie so much as it is designed to elicit reaction to the visuals.
The world is very surreal, dreamlike almost like an LSD trip which I believe is what they drink in the film.
After Mandy is killed the tone shifts to more revenge almost like a "this LSD trip is over, time for reality to kick back in"
Almost reminded me of a retro 80's version of an old Excalibur fantasy or like a movie like Legend set in contemporary times. There's also def an element of heavy metal themes throughout too. Forging of the sword, fire, I think Mandy was wearing a Sabbath shirt earlier in the film as well
EDIT: Cheddar Goblin was great, apparently made by the "Too Many Cooks" guy

quote:what is so unbelievable about the joke? It's like an anti joke/dad joke and it's just giving a glimpse into their relationship. They adore each other and live a happy life together.

it's not 21st Century pop culture, CHiPs ran for like 10 years in the late 70's/early 80s. dad jokes have been around since the dawn of time
