Norman Lear, the creator of All in the Family, said he could never get any of his shows on mainstream networks today.

Maybe that explains why so many shows suck.

Here's a clip that the politically correct police would never allow on tv today.

LINK

Meathead: "Just because I guy is sensitive and intellectual and wears glasses doesn't mean he's a homosexual."

Archie Bunker :"No, a guy who wears glasses is a 4 eyes. I guy who's a fig is a queer."

This is hilarious in its simplistic stupidity. Archie's even got a derogatory term for people who wear glasses.

No tv show today could depict a bigot as lovable.

Extremely true. You could probably do something like that on cable (Archer comes close... sort of), but not on network tv.

Lots of shows from the 70s couldn't get on today. The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son are other examples.

Norman Lear also created those 2 shows as well as Maude and Good Times.

This Sanford & Son clip is very timely with all the racist white cop issues in the news, but it would never make it on TV now, decades later.

Yeah, but you couldn't have put Breaking Bad or the Sopranos on the air in the 1970s. It balances out.

Although that may be true to some extent, TV quality today is better than it has ever been

They'd be trying to work in a plot where Archie gets a sex change.

Exactly. Hell, you couldn't have put on Modern Family in the 70's, without turning the gay characters into Marty the queer purse snatcher from Barney Miller (flaming, cliche, and predatory).

Shoot, I remember when ER was groundbreaking because it was so beyond Marcus Welby, MD and Trapper John MD. And when The Sopranos came along, it made ER look as lame and hokey as junk from the 70s.

There are a ton of really good shows on basic cable, premium cable, Netflix, Amazon, etc. Stuff with really good actors and actresses, well-written, movie quality production values, interesting music

They could if he were gay or had gays on the show. Archie was in your face, but back when I watched it, Modern Family had a lot of subtle racist or bigoted lines.

I love Married With Children.. And even they had to deal with people overreacting.

All in the Fam definitely wouldn't be allowed now and it's a shame how sensitive we have become

The quality is on cable networks, not the big 4.
