Meh. And I'm fairly familiar with as agencies.

The two-hour opener was, simply put, a disappointment — even annoying — for how much it demanded from the viewer and how little it offered in return.
That's what they said last season...in fact, I was disappointed last season the first few episodes...but then it redeemed itself.
In fact, apart from "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" (Season 1) I can't think of a season opener that was really good. The openers always play out like a theater crew setting up the stage before the production.

It is what it is...I enjoyed it but I don't like how Don can't seem to grasp the concept of fidelity.

I liked it better and think a lot of people did too.

Forgot how great this show is. It's on par with Game of Thrones for me. I might even put it just above.

Sepinwall's review
His reviews always remind me you have to really know - really know - this show in and out to get the most out of each episode.
Maybe that's a problem for the casual viewer who finds it boring...they don't want to treat a TV show like a Trekkie.

If you look at the episode in the right perspective then it comes off as very well done. For me it was an introduction or setup for the rest of the season. I'm really intrigued to see the plot development for the 4 main characters of the 1st episode. Don, Betty, Roger and Peggy.

I enjoyed the episode. Definitely worth a re-watch to pick up on some of the "symbology."

Show has gotten too cute for its own good. I think Weiner is going out of his way to show how "smart" he is.

A lot of framed panning shots.

I think last night I finally decided that Don's a dick. After the meeting with the Hawaii hotel guys, it looks like Don is finally coping with a little reality, losing some of the magic. Then just a little bit later, we see him leave his drunk hot younger wife to go bang his neighbor's wife while her husband goes out into the snow to save a life.
The worst part is that Don could go pick up any hot bimbo for some anonymous sex. But he's banging his nice neighbor's wife. What a dick.

Because the shoeshine guy allowed him to access his grief for his mother. And by the way...holy shite...I just noticed upon second viewing that the Master of Ceremonies in Hawaii is my friend Kalani. I know they must have paid him a shitload because I have known him for about 15 years and I've NEVER seen him with short hair(although the chance to be on Mad Men was certainly the deciding factor). He usually gets cast as an Indian like in The New World.
