Ok... so what is "the light"? What does it symbolize? Why does it need protecting?
Is their some religous analogy that I am missing? I haven't been to church in a while.

I think we all just expected more answers on this episode - with 2, really 3 more episodes we should have known better. I'm curious to know what his name is.
At this point the funniest possibility is Adam.

The only problem I have is that MIB doesn't seem that bad.

Doesn't it have to do with why babies can't be conceived on the island?
I think they'll explain it.
The writers said in the podcast the Incident caused it.

but to be honest we always knew the core answers were probably going to be weak or unexplained.
this.

well isn't the statue the goddess of fertility, or was that bs?
i just don't see how they don't explain how jacob went from living in the cave to living in a giant random statue.

We also know why MIB can't get off the island... Oh wait, no we don't.
Yeah, in the very least this was the one answer I expected to be answered in this episode.

ok i'm not going to go back and read this thread but if some were disappointed i guess you could lump me in with them.
i was expecting this to be the episode that shed some light on the island (no pun intended) and i guess it was only a jacob/MIB thing.
also i guess i already knew because of spoilers who adam and eve were so that wasn't an earthshaking moment. should it have been?
i think i built this episode to be more than it was, i thought we'd learn more about the island which in a way we did but the nickel version i took from it is "jacob is protecting a light on the island".
that's it???
the writers pulp fiction suitcased us??????
i gotta take it all in maybe even watch it again. i mean i know the light probably symbolizes something all men strive to possess and blah blah but i'm going to have to sleep on how i feel about this episode. and i'm a lost sunshine pumper so to speak.

Anyone expecting realistic answers was out to lunch, but I was hoping they would come up with something better than he drank some wine.
Where did the mother come from? Where did she get her "powers?" How desperate for work was she that she read this script and said, ok.

I think that's my issue with where the story is headed as well - too much metaphor and allegorical stuff that feels kind of like a cop out.

There's still 3 and half hours left. I would think that would be addressed.

yes its clear that the writers haven't decided to leave things open for speculation because that's how they wanted, they just wrote themselves into a corner and didn't know how to resolve it.
There have been a few excellent episodes this season. Its not like its been all bad. Maybe I just had way too high expectations for this episode.

ok, so the woman obviously had powers. she blessed the wine to give him immortality, and when they were young she obviously did something to make it so they can't kill each other. there need to be some more complex rules tho because MIB killed Jacob using a loophole. Is it really a loophole to have someone else kill him? i'm thinkin it has something to do with free will. this also showed that the woman was tired of protecting the light, just as jacob probably was which is why he allowed himself to be killed.

It was supposed to be the Island backstory episode. I really wanted to know about the people that built the statue, and that obviously isn't going to happen.
No, but I must assume you are right. MIB knew he could manipulate time with the EM. But I swear I didn't see the light anymore when he left after Jacob killed him. Maybe that is what killed the light, but not the ability to manipulate time and such. Or maybe the light isn't completely out like you said. I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to catch it again online.

This is the first time I have been aggravated and disappointed with Lost since the second season.
I'm freaking anxious about the end.

The light has turned to darkness.
I'm guessing cuse and lindelof are big Tolkien fans.
