another answer was revealed last night....the origin of the others
I must have missed this. Was it simply that Jacob brought them to the island?
Thank you, I thought I was the only one that had no idea what he was talking about because no one responded.

I suppose that after Richard became Jacob's emissary, Richard brought more and more people to the island and they started to worship Jacob as a god.
How would Richard do this? He didn't have the sub and the black rock wasn't exactly ready to sail so how would you think he could bring people to the island when he seemingly couldn't leave the island?

I don't think that was really her, but the MIB taking her form to manipulate Richardus in that scene.
I thought that was quite obvious...is there some doubt to this possibility?

well we know Richard went back in time to visit a young John Locke when he was like 5 years old. somehow he got off the island. I think there are other instances of him doing this too but I haven't seen all the old episodes.
I would still like OML's explanation of how the origin of the others was explained this week.

Could MIB brekaing the glass be a clue to how he gets off the island?
Very interesting. So if the island is the figurative cork I wonder what the figurative glass is? It would be a nice twist since Jacob implied that the island is the key to keeping "evil" @ bay but MIB may have found yet another loophole.
Maybe the sub is the key for MIB to escape from "below the cork".
ETA: (totally thinking out loud here about overly complicated symbols)

Stu did you catch the explanation of the origin of the others that OML mentioned earlier?

I must have written that wrong. Jacob brought them to the island and Richard taught them about Jacob. There's no other explanation for the Others.
Richard started leaving the island after they laid waste to the Dharma folk.

Did we ever find out what happened to Ilana to put her in the bandages or is there a character centric episode for her in the future?

Mind sharing? Apparently more than one of us happened to miss that part.

Richard became the first of the people to later be known as "The Others". Richard then began serving Jacob and helped him recruit people to the Island and guide Jacob's people on the Island.

I don't think so Tim. I have a hunch that the others are traced back off island to the time when Jacob originated. I think they are connected in some way to Jacob/MIB before the island.

why are you guys debating?
It was clearly explained in the last episode the origin of The Others

People keep saying this and I have one small doubt that it was the MIB, since we have never seen the MIB take both the form of the smoke and the form of a human at the same time. While Isabella was running up the stairs in the Black Rock, you could clearly see the Smoke Monster. Maybe I am reading to much into this, but it seemed odd to me.
Yes we have: when Boone and Shannon were running from the Monster, the Monster seemingly kills Shannon, although that obviously didn't happen.

He was able to get off the Island to see Locke when he was a baby/toddler. I think there is some other entrance off the Island that only Jacob and Richard (and maybe MIB, but for some reason he can't use it).
