Or any other religion in the history of man.
They haven't force fed any other religion like Catholicism in LOST.
1) Eko's brother was a priest and Eko was Catholic
2) Charlie's flashbacks involved Catholic confession
3) Hurley's family is very Catholic
4) Locke's dad had a Catholic funeral
5) Richard was Catholic and praying for forgiveness from a Catholic priest
etc., etc.

so then what does "it only ends once, everything before that is just progress" -jacob at end of season 5 mean with respect to the theories about jacob's interest in humanity
I think what he means is that all of the people that come to the island all fail and end up dead or bad... This has been going on for many many years but MIB never escapes... There is no reset
It always ends the same is in regards to this little side game
People have always proven MIB right, but in Jacob's eyes they are just getting closer to finding a person who is inherently good
It only ends once, and everything else is just progress.

for the story to keep continuing, wouldn't jacobs replacement have to create another list of candidates, since MIB is just going to keep trying to kill them forever. Why would Jacob's replacement be the last replacement?
Posted on 3/23/10 at 11:12 pm to sgallo3
i would think the replacements job would be to not only keep MIB on the island but also protect the island..
MIB said that jacob was protecting the island... he may have been lying straight through his teeth but maybe not.
also, i have a feeling that it will only end once
MIB dies or MIB escapes... the only ways it can end... NO RESETS

I think that now that Jacob is dead, MIB needs to do one of two things (or both):
1) Find a replacement for himself
2) or make sure nobody replaces Jacob (i.e. kill off the 6 candidates).
I think that maybe if MIB's potential replacement (Sawyer?) tells MIB to frick off in the Finale...it really does "end once" and MIB is trapped forever.

Then MIB would have a replacement, because someone has to be the islands security system, to judge all comers and dispose of the bad ones.

I think who ever becomes the new Jacob does so by killing MIB so therefore Jacob/MIB game ends once. But a new game begins between New Jacob and and New MIB so that all are candidates but for either job. Hence why they can get the sickness (Sayid)

Oh and I want to add that Jacob being alive prevented MIB from killing "good" people while in smoke form. He didn't keep richard because he was the easiest to manipulate. He was a good person, killing the man was an accident when he was tryin to save his wife. Since smokey can look inside people, he could tell that Richard was good. It would be much easier to manipulate a bad person into killing Jacob for their personal gain

I'm going to make a finale prediction:
We know the name of the finale is "Across the Sea." What if this is referencing the world outside of the island? My guess is that someone (Jack, Sawyer, someone) takes the selfish route and lets MIB escape.
The world ends and time resets.
The final scene of LOST is literally the very first scene on a reset clock.
Best ending ever
well going along with the "game" theory i think the game is always won by MIB so far. jacob has to prove him wrong that people aren't inherently bad and he never can.
i think what we're leading up to is that the finale will be jacob will win the game through the actions of one or all of the losties. prove man is good. thus the game is over, the sideways timeline takes over, with the game board at the bottom of the ocean and the pawns continue living their lives as if they were never brought into the game in the 1st place.

going the MiB replacement route is there any way Aaron could be involved as Claire was warned about raising Aaron in season 1 and Christian/MiB was holding Aaron that night before claire left with him

Where does whitmore fit into all of this?

Guys you are forgetting about what Ben Linus was teaching in his episode about Napoleon Bonaparte and his exile to ELBA..........this story has so many similarities to the island and MIB......a place of exile with freedoms to carry out a plan......have guardians etc.

And why can't anyone see Hell has nothing to do with this........Hell was used as a manipulative tool for Richard.
When the smoke monster made contact with Richard, he didn't kill him because he was a man of FAITH.
This occurred in season 1 when Locke met the smoke and wasn't murdered..........he too was a man of FAITH.
The island isn't hell in the biblical sense but it does test one's faith in every aspect.
Jacob believes in faith........MIB, on the other hand, tries to use one's faith and make promises he can't deliver on in order to use them for his purpose.

Hell is below the Island. I would imagine that the Island would be much more crowded if the Island was hell.
I'm not so sure about this...so in the years that they have been there, they are the only people who have died on earth and are awaiting judgement?
I think MIB represents uncontrollable evil (see sayid) and Jacob is trying to protect him/it from escaping into the world...

I think Whitmore wants to kill MIB to take on his power and liver forever.......he too is evil and in that sense would carry on what the MIB stands for.
