Richard was petrified of not being absolved from his murder and going to hell and i think MIB caught onto this durring his smokey recon and used it to manipulate richard from the beginning
another great example of the things MiB can do because of his ability to "scan" people. He can tell them what they already believe or want to hear.

Titus Welliver was badazz. Might just be the aura of the "original" MIB but I think he could end up being one of the show's best performances.
i know, he's awesome and it sucks that he probably won't be used that much because of MiB being stuck in Locke form

No doubt.

He'll definitely be used in the MIB episode.

i always kind of wrote the smoke monster off on the show thinking the producers made a huge mistake from the beginning with the whole scary monster destroying people. id love to go back and analyze the hell out of ever appearance now and see how from the beginning of the series the mib has been playing a HUGE role.

gotcha that makes sense. I guess the MIB took the form of his wife to convice him he was dead on teh ship? all a big dog and pony show by MIB to get Richard on his side.
Yes, the cork on the bottle makes sense, they aren't actually in hell, just on top of it somehow.
What is rattling in my head now is why would Jacob need to be replaced if he is a God like entity? How could he just be killed with a nife by Ben but then still talk to Hurley? Man there are so many layers in this. Can't wait for episode 15.

No, MIB is evil and Jacob keeps him contained.
Please don't post anymore spoilers btw.

Hurley can see dead people? You really need to stop watching Lost.

So are we all in agreement that MiB can either take smoke form or Locke form and nothing else?
The only reason I ask is because when Ben went to get judged by the smoke, MiB could transform into Alex. So just taking Locke's form when he came back to the island wasn't enough to make him "stick" in Locke form.
The only thing that could have made Locke stuck is when Jacob was killed. But I'm not sure how that works.
If Ilana is wrong about MiB being stuck as Locke, then MiB can still do some major league manipulation and might even be able to appear as Jacob.

The producers have confirmed this is the case.

Hurley can talk to anyone who is dead, he has been able to forever. and Jacob could be killed by any human

The cork example?

quote:Because that is the analogy Jacob used. BTW, "below" implies a location. I guess technically it's probably "between" hell and earth. It separates hell from earth.

The cork example was referring to how Jacob was keeping evil contained on the island. Had nothing to do with hell.

CE is right. The island isn't literally "over hell" with satan down there. Jacob explained it is many things, but most importantly, it is a darkness, like the infection now in Sayid and Claire, that is being kept at bay by the island.
It was clear that both Jacob and MiB were using "hell" because that was a term Richard could understand.
