What about the part of varied application to the thought and experience of the reader?
He literally says applicability presides in the freedom of the reader vs the purposed domination of the author.
You can’t read That quote and then say “we’ll actually it supports My position that Tolkien would want us to read it exactly as he intended.” That’s the domination of the author the doesn’t like.
