Technically yes. One thing I've noticed is that they have been careful not to use the word Hobbit, though. They keep calling them Harfoots (which is just a breed of Hobbit). Also, there is no record of Hobbits existing in the Second Age. That doesn't mean some early form of Hobbit didn't exist then, being that they're believed to be an offshoot of the race of Men. But this just seems to be them playing fast and loose with the lore.

Well I was 11-13 years old when they came out. I also Loved the books. I just Read the Hobbit aloud to my then in utero child.

At no point ever reading the books did I think: these would be ruined if Frodo was black.

You miss the forest for the trees. Consistently. It can be a good enjoyable show based on Tolkein’s works while having black actors. It can be a good and not be a page by page remake of the silmarillion.

You know who the actual racists are: the people who have point blank said about this series that people can’t identify with someone outside of their race. This has been directly said that now kids of different races will now finally have someone to identify with in Tolkien’s universe. In other words, they point blank say that minorities should not be able to identify with Frodo. So talk about a self own.

It does seem like you're actively trying to be a douche right now because the trailer wasn't the crapshow you thought it would be. The show could still be awful, but there's very little to complain about in those two minutes. Maybe not much to be excited about either, for many of you.

You can not refute my point on the live action Avatar: The Last Airbender which is another high fantasy series with a similar budget that will be released in the next few months but was appropriately cast with an entirely asian and indigenous cast. I’ll buy that they’re fans of the movies, but not the books. Tolkien fans have a way of speaking where you can tell pretty easily if they actually are fans of the books or not.

But he can’t explain to me why me being slightly perturbed on the casting of this is a problem when I’d be much more upset if they did a white cast with live action Avatar. It’s an apples to apples comparison and he has no retort to it.

They should have never made the Hobbit into 3 movies. I am not feeling this one at all.
