My point is, while Tolkein had his intentions, the LOTR hasn’t become Englands mythos. It’s a great project to draw from the already existing mythos of England, but did you know any of that BEFORE you read the hobbit or the LOTR trilogy?

Probably not.

Is it necessary to enjoy them? Also no.

Do the books not posses universal themes that transcend England?

Further, the maps provided make it clear that while based on these legend and stories, this isn’t in England.

Correct. I didn't know the full history of Tolkien or his movies before I read The Hobbit.

None of that is germane to the issue being discussed.

Literally no one claimed it was. But 'inspired by' can have many degrees of comparison.


Listen, you want black and brown people? Fine. They're in his works. They're called Haradrim, and Southrons. Areas of Near and Far Harad. They existed, but Tolkien's writings, the stories of the Ring, of Hobbits and such, didn't include them.

They were part of their own stories, and not until the war of the Ring did they enter into the area of Gondor. So The Hobbit and LOTR stories didn't concern them.

Deal with it.

That’s not my claim at all, my whole arguement was that Tolkien’s intention to write some English mythology doesn’t really matter.

Not NOTHING he wrote matters.

But just like I wasn’t upset that dwarves in the Hobbit movie didn’t all have colorful cloaks and beards exactly as he described, I’m not upset that some elves are black.
