The story of House Targaryen will be told. House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is coming to HBO and HBO Max.

quote:

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

quote:

Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen. Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower. She’s the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.

Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The king’s first-born child. She is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything…but she was not born a man.

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne, Daemon is a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…

quote:

Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon aka “The Sea Snake.” The lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen, “The Sea Snake,” is the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros. He built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world.

Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. A dragonrider and wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, "The Queen Who Never Was" was passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council because the realm favored her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male.

Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, who loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king's brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.

Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria. She came to Westeros with nothing, sold more times than she can recall, and could have wilted...but instead she rose to become the most trusted — and most unlikely — ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.

Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole. Of Dornish descent, Ser Criston is the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven. He has no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name is his honor and his preternatural skill with a sword.

I will support no GoT universe stories until the original series of books is completed.

Of course I will watch it, probably even if it sucks. I just hope that if it’s bad, it just ends up being Revenge of the Sith so bad its good and not The Last Jedi bad, shitting on everything made beforehand.

Game of Thrones failed to stick the landing, but the world they built is ripe for adaptations like this.

My friend sent me a really brilliant article about why this prequel - or any prequel really - tends to not wow in the same way.

Short version: there's markedly less intrigue since the outcome is already known. And since they're in the peak of dragon existence the whole idea of magic and dragons is just a fact of life rather than a spectacle.

Really good read, but somewhat long. This along with lack of faith in HBO lately temper my expectations.

The narrative collapse of Game of Thrones the TV show happened along both dimensions simultaneously: The main magical plotline was resolved in a single episode halfway through the final season, as if the showrunners felt the political storytelling was more interesting and fundamental and all the supernatural business faintly embarrassing … except that their rushed ending also undercut the political realism, the verisimilitude that the show at its best achieved, and left the story with neither magic nor machiavellianism to offer, just the dumbest elective monarchy in world history

Pretty much nailed it in that link.. Speaking of Bran becoming king of course.. lol

I know I am just feeding into GRRM's terrible work ethic, but I love reading all of his work. I enjoyed the Fire & Blood book and will probably read it again before the show starts.

As for the argument about knowing what happens, I think that's probably right. I am having a hard time remembering each of these character's arc, but Sir Criston Cole has a distinct nickname given to him after the events of this story that kind of tells the entire story in one word. So, yeah, it would need to be really good to make up for the lack of surprise.

I’m in for it. Different creative staff who has the destination lined up and a roadmap drawn for them, they just have to make sure the journey is enjoyable.

A man can believe what he chooses. I started this series 20 years ago. The only thing I have read, apart from the primary text, are the Dunk and Egg short stories.

I thought on GoT people said dragons haven't been around for a thousand years and they were the size of dogs at the end.. This will only be 300 years prior to GoT..

No, you’re misremembering. Aegon the Conqueror used 3 dragons to conquer Westeros 300 years prior to A Game of Thrones. A thousand years ago, the Valerian dragons were in the Valerian empire.

The last time there were more then a few fully grown dragons was during the Dance of the Dragons (a civil war) in which most of them were killed. This happened about 170 years prior to the current storyline. The last dragon died a few decades later.

Given the characters present, it seems this story will be taking place close to the time of A Dance of the Dragons. So plenty of dragons and civil war. One of the original dragons Aegon used to conquer Westeros should still be alive and quite massive. Possibly the biggest dragon Westeros will ever see.

Based on how they talked him up towards the end of GOT than he apparently is going to be a bad arse - probably moreso than Danerys, it will be worth a watch

I still hope they make a sequel one day even without books to see what happens to some of the major characters like Arya Sansa and Jon Snow and Tyrion, etc.
